Donna Coraly Country Boutique Hotel, Syracuse
Restored centuries-old farmhouse, turned luxury boutique with airy rooms, private gardens, two pools, and a fine-dining restaurant within a botanical park
Overview
Kimkim's Take
- You'll stay on a centuries-old family estate with a genuinely fascinating backstory—the Armistice of Cassibile was signed here in 1943, and the memorial stone still stands in the garden.
- You'll find oodles of distinctly Sicilian craftsmanship throughout, with Caltagirone ceramics, lava and Comiso stone, antique family furnishings, and rooms named after notable women from the island's history and literature.
- Every room has its own private garden, patio, or veranda, so even the smaller categories come with a quiet outdoor space of their own.
- The 1.2-acre (5,000 sq m) botanical park Donna Coraly is set within is a real highlight, filled with ancient olive and carob trees, citrus, jasmine, roses, tropical plants, and an organic kitchen garden you can stroll through.
- You'll have two places to swim and unwind, including a heated, lagoon-style pool plus hot tub, surrounded by gardens and aromatic plants.
- History buffs can book a guided experience around the estate, covering the old masseria, the Armistice memorial, the family story, and the gardens—with Sicilian wine and bites along the way.
- The countryside setting feels peaceful and removed, but you're still only about 15 minutes from Syracuse and Ortigia and roughly 25 minutes from Noto.
- For such a special stay with its luxury offerings and its historical pedigree, the buffet of pastries, fruit, jams, and a la carte options feels a little lacking in choice.
- Beds are on the narrower side.
- You'll really want a rental car here. The rural setting is part of the appeal, but restaurants, beaches, and sightseeing spots beyond the hotel aren't within walking distance.
Authenticity
Donna Coraly occupies a centuries-old masseria that has belonged to the Grande family for generations, with current owner, Lucia, drawing inspiration from her grandmother, Coraly Grande Sinatra—a prominent Syracusan noblewoman, art lover, traveler, and advocate for women's rights. The estate also played a small but significant role in World War II history: the Armistice of Cassibile between Italy and the Allied forces was signed on the property on September 3, 1943, and its memorial stone remains in the garden today. Inside, antique family furnishings mingle with contemporary artworks, hand-painted Caltagirone ceramics, Comiso and lava stone, and other distinctly Sicilian details, while rooms are named for notable women from the island's history, literature, and religious traditions. Guests can delve deeper into the property's past on a guided visit through the historic farm, botanical park, and baglio.
Location
Donna Coraly sits amid the quiet countryside south of Syracuse, with easy access to many of southeastern Sicily's highlights: Ortigia and Syracuse are about 15 minutes away; Noto is roughly 30 minutes by car; and Catania Airport is around 45 minutes. Modica, Scicli, and Ragusa Ibla can all be reached in under an hour. Nature lovers can also venture to the coastal reserves of Vendicari and Plemmirio, while the fishing village of Marzamemi and Mount Etna make rewarding excursions farther afield. On-site parking and an electric vehicle charging station are available, and airport transfers can be arranged.
Rooms & Bathrooms
Ten unique and spacious rooms and suites combine Italian artworks, a couple of which are from Donna Coraly's private collection, with rich fabrics and bespoke furnishings. All open to a private garden, patio, or veranda, giving you direct access to the surrounding botanical park. Bathrooms are bright and generously sized, outfitted with robes, slippers, and Ortigia bath products, and feature walk-in showers made from locally sourced lava and Comiso stone and colorfully patterned Caltagirone tiles. For added space, Carmela has a separate sitting area; Maruzza includes a second single bedroom and two bathrooms; and Lucia adds a private lounge and dining room, and, best of all, a fireplace and an outdoor hot tub.
Amenities
You can wander around the estate's sprawling botanical park among palms, cacti, citrus trees, jasmine, roses, and a centuries-old carob tree. There are two places to swim and unwind—a pool set among olive trees and a heated "bio pool" (a lagoon-style pool) with a hot tub—as well as quiet garden corners and a glasshouse orangery for relaxing out of the sun. Nuove Tradizioni, housed in the restored former olive mill, serves seasonal Sicilian cooking centered on organic vegetables and herbs picked from the estate's own garden, alongside regional wines; you can also stroll through the kitchen garden itself. Sunset aperitivi, a bar, dedicated parking, and guided historical experiences round out the facilities.
Family-Friendliness
Donna Coraly is geared toward couples, though families of three may find accommodations with the Maruzza suite, as it pairs a double bedroom with a smaller single room ("Maruzzella") and two bathrooms.
