Hacienda El Porvenir, Cotopaxi

4.5 (6 reviews) · Comfort
Andean hacienda with volcano views, cozy fireplaces, an on-site restaurant, and a spa

Overview

Nestled on the slopes of Rumiñahui Volcano, Hacienda El Porvenir offers a unique experience in a remote location. Just an hour and a half away from Quito by car, the hacienda is a great spot for exploring the Cotopaxi volcano and its surroundings. With its proximity to Cotopaxi National Park, one of the most beautiful protected areas in the country, you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the páramo and discover the landscape of the volcanoes route.

Hacienda El Porvenir features 22 guestrooms designed to provide a comfortable and authentic stay. The rooms have conveniences such as complimentary bottled water and daily housekeeping, but some units are notably simpler than others, so we recommend booking early. Kimkim travelers have praised the hacienda's cleanliness, comfort, and special touches like cozy fireplaces and hot water bottles at night.

What sets Hacienda El Porvenir apart is its rich history, dating back to colonial times, and its dedication to sustainable agriculture, cattle farming, conservation, and ecotourism. The hacienda produces milk, cheese, and even some of the vegetables offered in its restaurant, while the herb garden is essential to its delicious cuisine. The farmhouse is made from local materials, keeping the spirit and essence of traditional Andean construction, and offers a warm and inviting atmosphere.

I loved the incredible atmosphere at the hacienda. We had great views of Cotopaxi once the rains cleared. The room was small but nice. The living room was so comfortable, with a nice fireplace and comfy couches. I had a very relaxing massage. The food was great and the staff welcoming, providing an interesting history of the place. This was our favorite lodging during our entire trip: the location is beautiful (you can take hikes around the property); the rooms comfortable, spacious, and with a lovely local aesthetic (and our own wood stove!); the breakfasts and dinner absolutely delish; the staff wonderful. Read more

My husband liked it well enough, but I didn’t. The road to get there is horrible and long—-the end result was simply not worth it. The food was not that good and yet more expensive than more upscale haciendas. ; extra charge for eggs with breakfast. I unwisely ordered a salad — forgetting that any greens wouldn’t necessarily be washed with purified water and I guess they weren’t. I got quite ill for days afterwards. The rooms are rustic at best. Granted, it’s a farm kind of hacienda. But it’s a very arduous and uncomfortable drive for a not very remarkable experience. I saw some nose-to-tail horse riding in the cold mist going on. It was clouded in, so any advertised amazing views of Cotapaxi weren’t going to happen. Cotapaxi views are more easily had anywhere else. So even without the getting-sick experience, I just would not recommend this place.

Authenticity & Character
It’s character is what it is — a very remote farm.
Location
Such a long and uncomfortable drive to get to. Nothing to be changed about that.

Cleanliness & Comfort
Nothing can be changed I think, given the structures they are working with.
