Overview
Kimkim's Take
- Staying in a restored former convent perched above the Cova da Beira valley is an experience in itself, with ever-changing mountain views.
- From thick stone walls and grand arches to antique furnishings and wrought-iron fixtures, the property leans fully into its monastic roots.
- The restaurant is excellent, with past kimkim travelers giving top marks—ideal since dining options require a drive.
- The guesthouse is quiet and perfect for travelers who want to slow down, unplug, and commune with nature.
- Staff are notably attentive and helpful, especially when it comes to luggage assistance and navigating the property.
- The pousada's historic design adds character but may require extra care for guests with mobility concerns. There are no elevators, and many rooms involve steps.
- The hillside location is more remote, so having a car is essential for getting around.
Authenticity
Pousada Convento Belmonte is an atmospheric stay set within the restored ruins of the former Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, built over a 13th-century hermitage—and likely atop even older pagan worship sites—at the foothills of Portugal's Serra da Esperança. The renovation carefully preserves the building's monastic bones, from thick stone walls, arches, and pillars to the original chapel and sacristy, now reimagined as a lounge and bar. The on-site Nouvelle cuisine restaurant focuses on regional recipes with local ingredients and a seasonal mushroom menu, thanks to its proximity to the Serra da Estrela.
Location
Set on a hillside at the foothills of the Serra da Esperança mountains, the pousada is just over half a mile from the medieval town of Belmonte, a 6-minute drive away or a 30-minute trek. Its removed location offers sweeping vistas over the Cova da Beira valley and toward the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. A car is essential for getting around, especially for alternative dining or exploring the wider region, from Belmonte's castle and museums to hiking trails in the nature reserve.
Rooms & Bathrooms
Amphitheatric rooms are individually styled, leaning into the pousada's spiritual past with wrought-iron fixtures and bed frames, vaulted ceilings, and stonework that echo the building's religious past. All include balconies with impressive views, some overlooking the Estrela mountains. Bathrooms are comfortable and functional, though layouts often include steps between spaces. For a little extra luxury that includes more space and added comforts (bathrobe and slippers), book the Superior Suite with Terrace.
Amenities
The expansive terrace, complete with an outdoor swimming pool, is the standout, where guests can relax on sun loungers while taking in panoramic views of the valley and mountains. The on-site restaurant is also a major draw, serving regional Serra da Estrela cuisine under Chef Valdir Lubave, with generous portions and a thoughtfully curated wine list. Breakfast is included, and many guests don't stray far, choosing to eat lunch and dinner here as it's that good. Indoor lounges—in restored convent spaces—are cozy spots to unwind.
Family-Friendliness
While not designed specifically for families, the pousada can accommodate them. The Superior Double Room and Superior Twin Room sleep up to four guests, but the abundance of stairs and split-level layouts may be challenging for very young kids or parents pushing strollers.
