Overview

Step back into the 1940s in this historic Art Deco hotel located off of Avenida Liberdade, one of Lisbon's main streets that connects to downtown and the historic center. One of Portugal's most influential modernist architects, Cassiano Branco, designed this building in the 1940s, and it's the only Art Deco hotel in the city. Major sites like the Lisbon Cathedral, São Jorge Castle, and the Old Town of Alfama are 30 minutes away by foot, or you can grab the metro, 10 minutes away, to be there in 20 minutes. Lisbon Airport is a quick 20-minute drive, or there's a bus to the airport less than five minutes away.

The building's original Art Deco features have been retained and pristinely restored to create an evocative atmosphere that's perfect for couples or friends. Geometric designs, brass fittings, and cork floors all bring history to life in these mostly double rooms. Classic Rooms can feel tight, so consider Premium, Suite, or Terrace units for more space. Terrace options have large outdoor spaces where you can enjoy a view of the city, and all rooms have marble-lined bathrooms with bathtubs.

The hotel's common areas really capture the spirit of 1940s Portugal. The wood and leather-lined library is a cozy place to grab a book or board game. The bar feels intimate and like a good place to practice your best Gatsby impression, and there's even a vintage barbershop on the premises where you can picture folks of the '40s getting coiffed for a night out. We had a lovely stay at the hotel Britania! It was our first stop after arriving in Lisbon and the perfect place to get over jet lag. The room was so comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful. Sue Ellen, Larissa, and Omar went above and beyond to make our visit special. The breakfast staff was also very attentive and hospitable. You could tell it was old luxury right from the front door. Everything felt authentic and the free port in the lobby was a nice touch.
