Overview

Channel your creative side as you make traditional Portuguese azulejos (tiles) in this two-hour express workshop. To begin, head to Cerâmica S. Vicente, a family-run studio in Lisbon that uses traditional tile-making techniques. Your hosts will give you an introduction to the history of Portuguese tiles and then teach you to handcraft your own set of six tiles inspired by traditional designs. Once fired, your tiles can be collected three days later or shipped to your home address for an additional fee.

What you'll do

This fun, two-hour workshop takes place at Cerâmica S. Vicente, a family studio in Lisbon run by artist Cristina Pina and her son Miguel. When you arrive, your hosts will give you an overview of the history of tile-making in Portugal, which the Moors introduced in the 13th century. The country is now famed for its azulejo tiles, which decorate the facades of everything from religious buildings to palaces and train stations. 

Next, your host will guide you through the process of creating your set of six 3 x 3 inch (7.5 x 7.5 cm) tiles. You'll go through the process step-by-step, from glazing to painting, and you can choose to reproduce traditional Portuguese patterns or create your own unique designs. When you've finished, the tiles will undergo the firing process, which takes three days. After they've cooled, you can pick up your finished keepsakes from the studio or, for an additional fee, have them shipped to your home address; just let your host know which option you prefer.
