Tips for future travelers

You MUST get out of the city and go to the country side, it’s beautiful and we went when nothing was in bloom. Also, there’s some discussion about specifically being with Ivo and being introduced to a local Portuguese family and farm and dining and having drinks with them. If this was an option we would have completely loved to have done something like that. Please consider it!!

Ivo is a great conversationalist, he’s funny and he’s knowledgeable about the area. And he’s a skilled driver! There are some tricky roads with no guardrails and he knew how to navigate. We especially loved that he took us off the beaten path (with our permission of course).

The drive from Porto to Douro Valley was beautiful … every time I would say “wow, this is gorgeous,” my driver, would say, “wait, it gets better,” and it did! Miguel was incredible - very knowledgeable about the region, the wine and port, and recommended a great extra stop (Amarante) because we had plenty of time before my winery tour and lunch. Read more

Due to time and my other interests for the whole trip, I only toured and tasted at one winery. Next time, I’ll make sure to add at least one more tour and tasting.

Douro Valley is beautiful. Even if you’re only a causal wine or port drinker, it’s worth the time!

The views were beautiful and the restaurant he recommended for lunch was fabulous. The boat tour part was just ok.
