Guðmundur Óli Pálmason

Born in Reykjavík, Iceland in 1978, from a young age I was already travelling all over Iceland with my parents.
After a short stint as a driver guide on modified SUVs in 2004, I came back to it full time in 2015 and have been working as one since then.
In 2020, I co-founded Location Scouting Iceland, a company that specializes in finding locations and providing location service for all kinds of productions.
In addition, I have been working as a travel planner and a travel specialist since January 2022.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"For the last decade or so I have made it a point to explore locations off the beaten path. This includes but is not limited to the north-west and the east of Iceland (the so-called Westfjörds and Eastfjörds) as well as the central highlands. "

How did you get involved in travel?

""I started travelling with my parents around Iceland at an early age and I guess that's where I picked up the travelling bug. In my early 20s I started travelling around Iceland on my own and with friends. My biggest interest was always finding out what was at the end of the unmarked gravel road. What unexplored treasures would I find that weren't on the map?
In 2004 I worked for one summer as a driver guide on a modified Land Rover Defender for the first time. That's when I started to gain experience in off-road driving on glaciers and mountains. I came back to that job in early 2015 and have been working as a driver guide full time ever since. ""

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

""Travelling around the vast Icelandic highlands, the biggest untouched wilderness in Europe, under the midnight sun is something I'd list as my absolutely favorite pastime, with clients or alone.""

Our family of four had a fantastic week in Iceland, thanks to Gummi’s thoughtful recommendations and expert trip planning. From catching an error in our flight booking to promptly answering questions along the way, his professionalism and good humor were much appreciated.

Be sure to get a rental car with the Wi-Fi package—it made accessing maps and travel info on the go so much easier (and kept the teenagers happy, too). Speaking of maps, Gummi’s daily trip guides were incredibly helpful. Each morning, we could simply hop in the car, knowing our route was already planned out.

The accommodations along the way suited both parents and teens, giving everyone space to relax and recharge. Highlights of the trip included the stunning sights along the South Shore—Glacier Lagoon, Reynisfjara, and Seljalandsfoss—as well as a scenic stretch of gravel road (AWD!!) that led us to Fitjarfoss and a beautiful overlook of Uxavatn during our drive from Húsafell to the Golden Circle.

The rooms were very nice, very clean. We liked the common areas, but it was a bit awkward sharing with strangers. The hot tub was unusable. The surfaces were covered in a slimy biofilm. We reported this to the staff (all of whom are very very young), and they drained and refilled the tub, but did not clean it. So we could not use it. The restaurant was ok.

From start to finish, Gummi was a great help. WE had only two issues during our entire trip and Gummi was very quick to respond and to smooth out the problems. He picked some wonderful hotels for us to stay in. Our favourites were the Hotel Ranga, Hotel Jokulsarlon, and the Hotel Husafell. He arranged for us to drive a Toyota Proace via Blue Car Rentals, which was perfect for the group. It was quite easy on fuel too. Our tours were also quite good, although the Katla ice cave is less of a cave and ore of a smaller hole due to ice melting and deterioration. All of our small tour guides were terrific. The lava cave experience in Vidgelmir was particularly fantastic. Also important were the detailed notes that Gummi provided about parking, facilities at the places we visited, and other relevant information. Our days were quite filled, and we mostly felt like we saw the main highlights of Iceland, and a bit more. That said, by the latter part of our trip, we opted not to drive around the entire Snaefellnes peninsula in order to enjoy a more leisurely day. Gummi arranged for us to experience four of the famous Iceland thermal baths. I added two more: the Secret Lagoon and the Lysulauger algae bath. For some of the group, it was their first and only trip to Iceland; for others, we will return again!

Thank you for the kind words, Stephanie. I am happy to hear that you were happy with the trip and that everything went smoothly.
The Katla ice cave is constantly changing, as meltwater re-shapes the cave and its environment, I am sorry to hear it didn't compleately live up to expectations, but such is nature I guess.
It makes my day knowing that some of you are already thinking about returning! There's so much to see and do in Iceland!
Until next time!

Iceland has long been on our bucket list, but nothing could have prepared us for just how magical this trip turned out to be. From the moment we arrived, we were swept into a world of raw, untamed beauty—towering waterfalls, black sand beaches, glittering glaciers, and moss-covered lava fields that looked like something from another planet. Every direction we turned offered a postcard-perfect view.

What truly elevated this trip into something extraordinary was our incredible guide, Gummi. Warm, professional, and impressively knowledgeable, he not only knew the land inside and out but also shared its rich history, folklore, and geology in fascinating and deeply engaging ways. My daughter and I were traveling alone and we always felt safe, cared for, and completely at ease.

A large part of our trip was was spent at Grimsstaðir farm, where we were welcomed with the kind of genuine hospitality that stays with you. The cottages were freshly built and beautifully designed, with all the essentials thoughtfully provided. The beds were exceptionally comfortable, which made it easy to relax and recharge after long rides. The owners were gracious, kind, and clearly devoted to their beautiful Icelandic horses, who were just as charming and curious as we’d hoped. Spending time with them—both horses and humans—was soul-nourishing and gave us a real glimpse into rural Icelandic life.

This trip wasn’t just a vacation—it was a transformative experience.

Hotel Review
Grímsstaðir Horse Farm

Staying at Grímsstaðir Horse Farm was nothing short of magical. Nestled in the heart of Iceland's breathtaking countryside, this farm is a perfect escape — with rolling green fields, wide open skies, and a sense of peace you can’t find just anywhere. The newly built guest cottages are cozy, modern, and thoughtfully designed, offering all the comforts you need while staying true to the rustic charm of the surroundings. What truly sets Grímsstaðir apart, though, is the warmth of its people. The hosts are not only incredibly welcoming and kind, but they are also excellent riding instructors. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, they meet you exactly where you are, creating a safe, encouraging, and unforgettable horseback experience. Riding their well-trained, gentle horses on the beach was a dream come true. Sitting down to lunch and dinner after our rides, sharing stories and laughter over hearty dishes, made us feel like we were part of their family. Grímsstaðir Horse Farm is more than a place to stay — it’s an experience of Icelandic culture, hospitality, and nature at its finest. I can’t recommend it highly enough. We’re already planning our return.
