Maria Jose Jaramillo

I grew up in a family with roots in different parts of the country. From a young age, I had the chance to travel and explore the culture, history, and nature of Ecuador and South America. These experiences sparked my love for travel and inspired me to study a professional degree in tourism. That is why I proudly work at Responsible Travel, where I create unique and personalized trips for every traveler, regardless of their age, interests, preferences, or sexual orientation. I respect everyone and connect them with local culture and nature, support communities, and protect the environment. Thanks to our work and continuous efforts to improve, we have earned international recognition and certifications such as Travelife, TourCert, and UN Global Compact, showing our strong commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"We specialize in making your dream trip come true by creating unique experiences for special moments like birthdays or anniversaries. Imagine descending the Cotopaxi one day, snorkeling in the Galápagos the next, and exploring the Amazon rainforest by canoe, surrounded by monkeys and tropical birds. Ecuador, with its four regions (Coast, Highlands, Amazon, and Galápagos), offers incredible diversity in one place. I focus on adventure trips with an emphasis on culture, history, and wildlife, providing a complete experience without long distances."

How did you get involved in travel?

"From a young age, I dreamed of flying to every corner of the world, and my grandmother, recognizing my passion, took me on summer adventures to discover Ecuador’s hidden treasures. Those experiences fueled my love for travel and inspired me to pursue a degree in hospitality, allowing me to see each country as a unique destination ready to be shared."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"One travel experience I’ll never forget was my last trip with my grandmother and mom. We traveled to Riobamba with my aunts and cousin. We explored the city, which felt like stepping back in time to the Spanish colonial era. Then we went to Alausí to ride the famous Devil's Nose train. The combination of the breathtaking mountains and the clear blue sky was unforgettable. Sharing those moments with my grandmother and mom, especially since my grandmother is no longer with me, made it one of the best days of my life. It was that trip that made me realize how much I wanted to share these kinds of experiences with others."

Overall our trip to the Galapagos was wonderful and we enjoyed ourselves very much.

Nature and highlights:
Amazing wildlife and we really appreciated the local knowledge and enthusiasm of the guides we had across the 4 islands we visited. This knowledge helped us see so much more than if we were on our own.

Hotels:
We enjoyed all of the hotels we stayed in and the responsiveness of the hosts. The Albemarle (Isabella island) was lovely but the very loud music next door until very late on a Friday night was unhelpful. I noticed this has been remarked upon in other reviews. Overall we enjoyed the hotels very much.

Guides:
We had superb guides in Alex, Ronnie, Daniella, and others whose names I have forgotten. All of the guides were absolutely excellent and were a major positive impact on our trip, except one - Gabriel on Isabella. Gabriel was a very nice guy and was trying to be helpful, however we had a communication problem in that neither of us could understand him very well. I appreciate that he has learned English but it wasn't good enough to be very useful. This was made worse by the fact that he was speaking very quickly and I suspect was a little stressed at the situation which became confusing.

As a result of our mis-communication we missed out part of our schedule and he changed it to a snorkel event at our extra cost without us knowing what was happening. We realised afterwards that we had missed the opportunity to see giant tortoises in the wild, which was very important to us (one of our highlights), so we separately hired bikes and completed the part that had been missed. The snorkel event that he took us on turned out to be very good, but we felt very confused as to what was happening. I reiterate that he was a very nice guy and was trying hard, but it was a language problem.

The snorkelling guide we had on our trip to Kicker Rock was really excellent.

Itinerary:
Overall, it was a really good and interesting itinerary. The one suggestion I would make would be to offer an alternative to the Sierra Negra volcano hike. For many tourists the heat, humidity and distance would be too much. We realised that we were not acclimatised enough for it and had to cancel it. We also heard of other tourists who turned back as it was too much.

There was some good variety in the itinerary and we felt like we had achieved a lot in our time there.

KimKim:
Maria Jose and the team at KimKim were very responsive and we were impressed with their support. It made a big difference to the trip to have everything so well organised. We were able to focus on the adventure rather than the administration, which was very much appreciated. We would happily recommend KimKim to other travellers.

It really means a lot to hear that you enjoyed the wildlife, the diversity of the islands, and especially the knowledge and enthusiasm of the guides throughout the journey. The Galapagos becomes even more special when experienced through passionate local experts, so I am very happy this had such a positive impact on your trip.

I also appreciate your honest comments regarding the situation on Isabela Island. Thank you for explaining it with such understanding and balance. I completely understand how frustrating and confusing that experience must have felt, especially considering how important the giant tortoise experience was for you. Your feedback is extremely valuable, and I will make sure it is shared internally with our local operations team for review and improvement.

Thank you as well for your comments regarding the hotels and the Sierra Negra hike suggestion. Insights like these genuinely help us continue refining future experiences for our travelers.

It was a real pleasure helping organize your Galapagos adventure, and I am very glad to know that the planning and coordination allowed you to fully focus on enjoying the experience itself.

Thank you again for trusting us with your trip, and hopefully, we can help you discover another part of South America in the future.

Our trip to Ecuador was truly the experience of a lifetime, and so much of that is thanks to the incredible care, planning, and support from Maria and Kim.

From the very beginning, Maria went above and beyond to help create an itinerary that somehow captured everything Ecuador has to offer. The trip was seamless, thoughtful, adventurous, and incredibly well organized across multiple regions, flights, boats, lodges, and experiences. Every detail felt intentional.

And Kim was simply exceptional. Knowledgeable, patient, kind, adaptable, and deeply passionate about Ecuador, its culture, wildlife, and people. She made every experience richer and more meaningful, whether we were exploring Quito, hiking near Cotopaxi, traveling the Napo River in the Amazon, or snorkeling in the Galápagos Islands. We always felt cared for, informed, safe, and genuinely welcomed.

This was not just a vacation. It was a beautifully curated experience full of adventure, perspective, learning, and unforgettable moments.

We are leaving Ecuador with full hearts and immense gratitude. Thank you, Maria and Kim, for helping create memories we will carry for the rest of our lives.

Any question we had she was on what’s app replying immediately. Our flights, boats, tours and transfers were always great and always on time.

Also in the planning part of the trip we told her what we wanted and in two emails had the perfect trip where she really helped us cover all of the activities, all of the islands and all of the animals we wanted to see — and because of her we were able to fit it into four nights without sleeping on a cruise ship.

We’d never used Kim Kim before and didn’t know what to expect, but as extensive world travelers MaJo’s work was so impressive and it was at a very reasonable price. Don’t risk your once in a lifetime Galapagos trip - use MaJo!!!!

Most of the group were delayed by a couple of days, and Maria helped each of us according to individual circumstances. As it turned out, I alone landed in Galapagos on the planned arrival day, and I was by myself for 48 hours until the group was reunited. Maria arranged for guides, transfers, and a great boat tour during those first two days on my own. I felt completely supported, even without my traveling companions in a new place. Once we were all together, the remaining week of tourism went very smoothly; we loved the excursions led by friendly and knowledgeable guides. Maria remained responsive and supportive throughout the entire tour and beyond. I was impressed with her patience and her genuine desire that we should have an excellent experience.

This is exactly the value of having a local specialist, someone who’s here to support you at every moment, adapt plans when needed, and make sure you always feel taken care of.

Thank you again for trusting me and Kimkim. I hope we meet again for another adventure in South America!

Warm hugs from Ecuador,
Majo
