Veronica Thomas

Hi, I’m Veronica Ondine Thomas. I’m half Mexican-American and originally from California. I moved to Mexico in 2016 and have been working in travel since 2019. Based in Tulum, I love creating authentic experiences that connect travelers with local culture, hidden gems, and meaningful adventures. My passion is helping people explore destinations in ways that support local communities and create lasting memories.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"Since I’m based in Tulum, I specialize in all things Riviera Maya and the Yucatán Peninsula — from hidden beaches, unspoiled fishing spots, and snorkeling adventures to lost archaeological sites and iconic pyramids. I design experiences that let travelers immerse themselves in Mayan communities and culture, often staying in unique lodgings with a wellness angle that make each trip both memorable and rejuvenating.

I also know Mexico City intimately, as I travel there several times a year for Rutopía’s quarterly launches and to explore its ever-evolving food, art, and cultural scene.

Another region close to my heart is Chiapas, especially around San Cristóbal de las Casas, where I often spend extended periods visiting friends and discovering new community-based experiences.

Growing up in California with family in Baja California, I know the peninsula well — from the relaxed surf towns and vineyards around Ensenada to the desert landscapes and hidden coves along the coast.

I’m also very familiar with Guadalajara and Lake Chapala, where I have strong family ties and spend time in nearby towns like Ajijic, Chapala, and Ocotlán.

Finally, I program many trips to Oaxaca, one of Mexico’s most vibrant cultural destinations, collaborating closely with our local partners there to curate authentic, meaningful experiences."

How did you get involved in travel?

"I got started in the travel industry here in Tulum, beginning at the first hotel as front desk personnel. As the hotel grew into a group with three destinations, I eventually became the e-concierge and reservations specialist for all three. That hands-on experience gave me a deep understanding of what makes a travel experience truly memorable and inspired me to specialize in designing personalized journeys across Mexico. Eventually, my passion for authentic, immersive travel led me to Rutopía, where I now craft unique experiences that connect travelers with the culture, communities, and hidden gems of Mexico."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"One unique travel experience I never forget is horseback riding at my friend’s ranch, Rancho Evergreen, in Chiapas. It’s one of the most beautiful places on earth — lush, peaceful, and surrounded by nature. Every time I return, it feels just as magical as the first time, and I feel so lucky to experience it often."

The trip went very well and the planning process was interactive and smooth. Veronica was able to include some Spanish activities that our kids (who learn the language at school) were able to engage with and for the most part adapted the tours and itinerary to suit our family of 5. Really the biggest challenge was often fitting in food around the tours and activities - some tours started very early or went into the middle of the afternoon which was a bit of a challenge for our kids who are used to regular meals. All-in-all we were able to work around this though, and everyone enjoyed the trip. Veronica included some things that we never would have done ourselves (kayaking in Celestun, snorkelling with turtles in Akumel) and these were some highlights of the trip. The team gave great restaurant recommendations too! The Fives in Puerto Morales was an awesome way to end the trip, nice and relaxing. Some callouts for specific guides, Isaac in Celestun really engaged with the kids, our driver in Merida (Victor) was great, especially helping our eldest daughter practice her Spanish, the bike tour guides around the Cenotes in Chemuyil was awesome too - super chill.

The Fives Oceanfront Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo

We had a great spacious two bedroom and two bathroom room with views of the pool and beach. It was a little strange to have a kitchenette but nothing in there to use except drinks in fridge and coffee. We couldn't even find a bottle opener to open the beer. The staff were all super friendly and we enjoyed being able to use the resort facilities but also walk into town to explore. The staff worked hard to clean the beach of the seaweed each day and their efforts are to be commended!

Hotel Merida
Mérida

The room had bugs (mosquitos at night, and found several dead bees on the floor), the bathroom was in need of a refresh and had a sewerage smell, and overall the room was a tight space for a family of 5. The included breakfast only started at 7:30 and wasn't actually part of the hotel, the options were extremely limited - with the restaurant wanting to charge more for coffee with milk (only black coffee was "included"). We only went there once for the 3 nights we stayed and made alternate arrangements on the other days. The pool looked quite green & cloudy, and not safe to swim in, it often had trash floating on top.

Authenticity & Character
The hacienda-style building/courtyard was nice.
Location
The location in central Merida was great. Everything was walkable.
Staff
The staff were a bit rude and gruff.

The hotels location was apparently right on a red-light district street, and the family room we were in had no natural light. The in-room spa was cool though - the kids enjoyed that. The breakfast was average.

The guide was fantastic and really helped make the tour of Teotihuacan interesting for the kids - they even got to try doing some art with local flowers/plants that created the color. They also bought crickets for the kids to try and took us to some local spots to see the crafts and sample the food.

The restaurant was great afterwards too - too much food one might argue! The entertainment was fun .

Thankfully we managed to find a bike that our youngest could dink on the back of as most of the bikes were too big for her to ride. We visited four cenotes in all and the guide was terrific and everything felt quite relaxed. This was a semi-private tour as there was another group that joined us. It was also great that they offered for us to buy a simple lunch afterwards too as that helped fuel us for our next activity.

We had been given a list of restaurants to try in the town and on one afternoon we decided to check out the town and take advantage of one of those recommendations. It was terrific - right on the water and food was delicious.

The kids were able to help make the tortillas and really enjoyed doing this and then eating what they had made. Seeing how it was cooked was also great. We were so happy that we were able to do the lunch in the community first prior to visiting the cenote as otherwise it would have made for a much longer/harder day with the kids.

Uxmal is a wonderful site but unfortunately the guide we had for that was not a great fit for our family. They didn't engage the kids as well as other guides during our time in Mexico. Thankfully when we went to the chocolate museum they switched up to an english speaking guide rather than Spanish which is what had previously been arranged. The kids were more engaged here and enjoyed seeing the different huts with information about the cacao beans, the mayan experience and also the animals.

Quality of Experience
Uxmal tour was just not as engaging for us because we couldn't connect with the tour guide. Complete opposite to the chocolate museum where the guide was great with our tired, hungry and hot children.

Our driver was great. Guide at the chocolate museum was also great (although we probably could have done this as a self guided tour)

It’s wonderful to hear that Penelope, Evan, and Margaret were able to engage with the Spanish-speaking activities and enjoy those hands-on moments — that’s exactly the kind of immersive experience we hope to create.

I’ll also be sure to pass along your kind words to Isaac, Victor, and the cenote cycling team — it means a lot, and I know they’ll be really happy to hear it.

I really appreciate your feedback around pacing and meal timing as well. This is incredibly valuable for us when designing family itineraries, and I’ll definitely keep it in mind going forward to better balance activity timing with mealtimes.

Thank you again for trusting us with your trip and for all your thoughtful insights throughout the process. It was a real pleasure planning this for you and your family.

Our favorite parts of the trip were floating in the Sian Ka’an and going to see the ruins in Calakmul. Being so far out in the rainforest. Seeing monkeys swing from the trees, and climbing up the ruins to see the amazing views from above is something we will never forget! My one critique is that a couple of the activities that we had planned on the itinerary were not what was described for us. We were put in a large group tour to Chichén itza when we were told it would just be a small group tour and it felt very rushed that whole day. Other than a couple discrepancies like that between the itinerary and what really happened, the trip went smoothly and kimkim did a great job helping us plan it. Thank you kimkim!

We didn’t have the time to research these, and she was so helpful in this department. Thank you so much! I would also compliment the team with whom I spoke on the phone, who asked a number of targeted and insightful questions that helped with the initial itinerary. They also were great when i edited/modified the itinerary. No push back at all.

As for experiences, these were the top:

1) Lucha Libre - an absolute must. Our guide was fantastic - mezcal tasting, walking tour and the match itself. Just fantastically fun.

2) Teotihuacan - a must do as well. Luis was incredible. Walked the whole thing with so much fun, insight and attention to detail. The photos don’t do it justice at all. Preserve your leg strength for lots of walking and steep steps!

3) the cooking class with Pame in Roma Norte. She is an excellent teacher and we loved the other attendees.

4) the cartoon museum in El Centro. Visit the caricature artist.

5) the kayak tour of the canals (Xochimilco) and the axolotl place. We had a great time but do know that the canals are dirty. Our guide was very nice; just know he had limited English. He even gave us a bonus bike ride through the village, which was super fun, and delicious coffee at his excellent coffee shop.

Criticisms :

1) The tour guide for El Centro was sub-par. He really didn’t know his way around and stalled for times at points.

2) we did not like Porfirio’s or Mestiza Polanco (both restaurants in Polanco). They were too corporate. In all fairness to KimKim, they were very nice and safe, etc, but just more corporate than we normally eat in.

Two other things:

1) check out Museo Jumex - it’s great and free. Also loved the cafe.

2) I did not find many people who spoke English. This is (or course!) fine, but for those who don’t speak Spanish, you should just be aware before you go. Mexican hospitality is amazing, so everyone was so nice and patient with my rudimentary Spanish (plus Google Translate helps).
