Coastal Mexico Adventure: Oaxaca, Huatulco & Puerto Escondido - 7 Days

Day 1: Arrive in Oaxaca, Walking Tour of Oaxaca City & Chocolate Factory

Welcome to Oaxaca! After a warm airport greeting, you'll head to your hotel to settle in before embarking on today's walking tour. Discover Oaxaca City's main sites, including the historic Seminary of Santa Cruz, the centuries-old Aqueduct Arcos De Xochimilco, and the striking cathedrals of Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán and Señor del Rayo. All these are set against the backdrop of Oaxaca's colorful and vibrant architecture, so look around as much as you look up!

Next, you'll explore Alameda de León and Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución), the city's main squares, where you'll witness the daily hustle and bustle of the city. Nearby, dive into the busy markets of Benito Juárez and 20 de Noviembre for an authentic taste of Oaxacan cuisine like tlayudas (flat toasted tortillas heaped with toppings) and tamales. Save room for dessert, though; after the tour, you'll visit a local chocolate factory and learn how traditional Oaxacan chocolate is made before tasting your own. Then, it's time to return to your hotel and call it a night.

Day 2: Discover Oaxaca's Natural Wonders, Ancient Sites & Local Crafts

Step into an enchanting full-day tour with your local guide as you explore more of Oaxaca's treasures beyond the city. Begin at Santa María del Tule, where the ancient and mighty Árbol del Tule (Tree of Tule) stands—a 2,000-year-old Montezuma cypress chronicled by the Aztecs and thus a sacred site today. 

Next, dive into the mystical oasis of Hierve el Agua, a petrified waterfall, and relax in the mineral-rich springs while soaking in the incredible mountain views. Next, you'll descend to the Mitla Archaeological Zone and get an intriguing glimpse into ancient Zapotec history before continuing to the town of Teotitlán del Valle to visit its famous wool-weaving workshops.

Wind down your busy day with a final stop at a traditional mezcal palenque (distillery). Savor various mezcal types and learn more about the cultural and spiritual importance of this agave-based drink before heading back to your hotel for a good night's sleep.

Day 3: Transfer to Huatulco, Cruise & Snorkel in Huatulco National Park

Leave Oaxaca City behind today as your driver takes you on the six-hour journey south to the Pacific coast and Huatulco, an area known for its charming villages, unspoiled beaches, and the pristine marine ecosystems of its nine coastal bays.

After settling in, it's time to board a small boat and set off to spend the rest of the day exploring the Bahías de Huatulco (Huatulco Bays) and Huatulco National Park. Cruise along the scenic Costa Esmerelda and keep your eye out for the plentiful flora and fauna, then hop off the boat to experience one of Mexico's best snorkeling spots. Swim through colorful coral reefs and schools of fish—you're lucky you might even spot rays, sea turtles, and dolphins. At the end of the day, you'll head back to the pier and return to your hotel for a relaxed evening.

Day 4: Hiking & Waterfalls Adventure in Sierra Madre del Sur

Today you'll turn your focus inland as your guide picks you up for a day of exploration in the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range. Stretching 620 miles (1,000 km) along Mexico's southwestern coast, this area is home to a unique subtropical rainforest ecosystem, which you'll start exploring upon arrival with a scenic hike.

Take in unspoiled views across the shifting landscapes as you make your way to a series of waterfalls. Here, you can stop for a break and cool off in the crystal-clear waters at their base. Spend some time relaxing and enjoying your surroundings, then make a visit to a local mountain community, where you'll be greeted with delicious, organic Oaxacan coffee and a traditional lunch. Taste simple, flavorful dishes like rice with butter, handmade tortillas fresh off the comal (griddle), and black beans cooked straight from the pot. Later in the afternoon, your driver will take you back to Huatulco.

Day 5: Snorkel in Bahía San Agustín, Transfer to Puerto Escondido

Pack your coral-safe sunscreen, hat, and swimsuit! Today, your local guide will pick you up for a scenic drive along the coastal road, taking you to Bahía San Agustín (San Agustín Bay) from Huatulco. This bay is home to one of the Oaxacan coast's most impressive coral reefs and is renowned as a top-notch snorkeling destination in Mexico. 

Upon arrival, entrust your belongings to the guide and gear up for a day of snorkeling. Explore the vibrant underwater world, spotting coral formations and marine life like sea turtles, pufferfish, manta rays, and sea urchins. After exploring various spots in the bay, return to the shore for a satisfying lunch at a local restaurant. Recharge while appreciating all the nature above the surface, too.

After several hours of snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing, it's time to meet your driver for the two-hour transfer to your next destination at Puerto Escondido. Enjoy a relaxing and beautiful drive west along the coast before you reach your accommodation and settle in for the night.

Day 6: Puerto Escondido Beach Day, Kayak in Laguna de Manialtepec

Wake up and start exploring more of Puerto Escondido today—a laid-back beach town blessed with golden beaches and prime surfing conditions. Wander through the cobbled streets, visit the Benito Juárez Market to shop for local handicrafts, or grab a drink at one of the many trendy cafés and eateries. Take in the chill beach vibes permeating the town, or head straight to the beaches for a morning of sun and sand.

Spend some time in the shallow waters and sheltered cove of Playa Carrizalillo, join locals at the popular Puerto Angelito, or seek tranquility on the endless stretch of white sands at Playa Bacocho. If you're looking for something a bit more adventurous, head to Laguna de Manialtepec, a biodiverse haven for flora and fauna like crocodiles, iguanas, and various bird species. Opt for a kayak tour to explore the lush mangrove swamps and spot wildlife with a knowledgeable guide, or return after sunset to witness a rare natural phenomenon as the lagoon's waters glow with shimmering bioluminescence.

Day 7: Depart Puerto Escondido

After a week sampling the charms of Oaxaca's countryside and coast, it's time to say your goodbyes. When the time comes, you'll transfer to Puerto Escondido Airport for your departing flight. Safe travels!
