Best of Laikipia

Encompassing more than two million acres across central Kenya, the Laikipia Plateau is the epicenter of a major conservation area. Former livestock ranches have been converted into safari lodges, and the wildlife watching is exceptional. Big cats, rhinos, giraffes, African wild dogs and zebras are among the many species commonly spotted here, and the region also makes a good base for hikes amid the rugged topography. Apart from the vast sun-baked plains, Laikipia has gorges, acacia forests and verdant rivers, with towering mountains off in the distance. 

Hiking the trails along Mt Kenya is a rite of passage for many travelers, particularly those who overnight at a mountain lodge high above the clouds. The many conservancies in Laikipia provide up-close animal encounters. You can go for safaris and take guided bush walks in Ol Pejeta, one of Kenya’s best conservancies. It’s also home to the only population of chimpanzees in the country. The small city of Nanyuki makes a great base for visiting Laikipia, and has the best shopping, dining and nightlife in the area.
