Pleasant temperatures in the high 60s (Fahrenheit) and minimal days of rain make June a great time to visit the Azores for those looking to spend time at the beach and hiking. Ferries and planes will be on their frequent summer schedule, making it easy to island hop, and as the Azores rarely gets packed, you can still enjoy quiet beaches and empty trails.

Weather

June is summer in the Azores, temperatures have warmed, and the rains have eased. You can look forward to pleasant daytime highs around 70ºC (21ºC), with lows around 61ºF (16ºC), and a modest 2 inches (5 mm) of rain throughout the entire month. The sea temperature also begins to climb and sits between 67ºF and 68ºF (19ºC and 20ºC) throughout the month, making it possible to swim, surf, and snorkel without a wetsuit. Even so, the Azores are known for their variable and quickly changing weather, so you'll want to be prepared for the odd day of rain, fog, and wind.

Crowds & Costs

Visitor numbers have steadily been increasing in the Azores. By June, the most popular islands of São Miguel and Terceira are nearing their busiest season, while the western islands of Flores and Corvo are just beginning to see a steady flow of tourists again. Accommodation and flight prices are also near their highest, and you can expect to pay between $100 to $200 a night for a four-star hotel.

Beaches near Ponta Delgada and Angra do Heroísmo will be busy; however, as the Azores are never overly packed, you'll still easily be able to find your own slice of sandy beach to enjoy. The same applies to hiking trails. While you'll see more people out and about than in the winter months, you'll still have plenty of moments of solitude.

Where to Go

With ferries and flights on their peak schedule, June is a great time to go island hopping. You'll likely begin your trip by flying into São Miguel, where you can base yourself in Ponta Delgada, the largest town in the Azores. From there, head to the island's west side to hike or kayak in Sete Cidades and soak in Ponta da Ferraria, a natural hot pool in the ocean. June is also a great time to visit the tiny inlet of Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo or opt for a day at Caloura or Pópulo beach.

If you'd like to escape the busy island of São Miguel, it's well worth spending a day on Faial Island. You can wander its peaceful Old Town and check out the lunar landscapes of Caldeira do Cabeço Gordo and Capelinhos Volcano. From Faial Island, it's just a short ferry to Pico Island. Base yourself in the charming port town of Madalena and head to the roof of Portugal, Mount Pico, or underground to the 3 miles (5 km) long Gruta das Torres Cave.

Terceira is another great island to explore in June. Pleasant temperatures are perfect for wandering the streets of Angra do Heroísmo and spending time at the beaches of Praia da Vitória and Praia da Riviera. On cooler days, visit Furnas do Enxofre, where you can hike alongside natural volcanic vents or hike up to Serre do Cume for beautiful island views.

What to Do

Pleasant temperatures are perfect for exploring the Azores from all angles, including hiking, swimming, snorkeling, whale watching, and driving. Choose between a weeklong itinerary exploring São Miguel highlights, or if you have more time, June is the perfect time to enjoy a 15-day island hopping trip around São Miguel, Faial, Pico, and Terceira.

If you prefer a more relaxing vacation, spend your days checking out the architectural highlights of Ponta Delgada, including the São Sebastião Church and the Nossa Senhora da Esperança Convent. Or drive around central São Miguel, admiring Lagoa do Fogo and Jardim do Paraíso ("Paradise Garden"). Then head to Terceira Island to spend your days soaking in biscoitos, natural lava pools along the coastline.

Active travelers will also be spoiled for a choice of things to do in the Azores this month. The lush landscapes are perfect for hiking, and you can tackle the challenging trek up the 7,713 feet (2,351 m) high Mount Pico or stick to lower ground and hike around Sete Cidades Lagoon, the Trilho das Vinhas de Criação Velha trail or Lagoa do Fogo. For an exhilarating experience, opt for a canyoning adventure through São Miguel's jungle or hop on a mountain bike and ride from Furnas to Pico do Milhos

Lastly, June is a great time to go dolphin and whale watching. Book a tour and take your chance at spotting migrating blue, fin, and sei whales and the resident common and bottlenose dolphins.
