With pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds than in July and August, September is one of the best times to visit the Azores. Sea temperatures are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and calm oceans are ideal for spotting the last of the migrating whales passing through. Expect the occasional rain shower, but you can enjoy the lush landscapes the Azores are known for in return.

Weather

September is the tail end of summer, and you can look forward to warm temperatures in the mid-60s to mid-70s (Fahrenheit) and 3.3 inches (84 mm) of rain throughout the month. Ocean waters are also at their warmest, sitting around 75ºF (24ºC), allowing you to swim and surf without a wetsuit. Even so, the Azores are known for varying weather, so always be prepared for the occasional rain shower and windy day.

Crowds & Costs

With the pleasant temperatures and warm ocean waters, September is a popular time to visit the Azores. You can expect costs to be similar to the peak visitor months of July and August. However, as the summer school holidays have finished, visitors tend to be older couples or couples without children. If you're looking for quiet, you'll find plenty of empty trails and beaches on the western islands of Flores and Corvo. Or, if you prefer to participate in the lively nightlife, Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island is the place to be.

Where to Go

Long daylight hours are perfect for exploring the unique landscapes strewn across the Azores. On a 15-day island hopping itinerary, you can make the most of each day as you explore Faial, Pico, Terceira, and São Miguel islands. On São Miguel, visit Ponta Delgada's architectural highlights and the impressive 5,413 feet (1,650 m) long lava tube of the Gruta do Carvão and be sure to soak up the nature at Sete Cidades Lagoon.

On Faial Island, you can explore Horta, the city center, and take in the lunar landscapes of Capelinhos Volcano. Then, hop aboard a ferry to Pico Island, visit Pico Whaling Museum to learn about the island's whale hunting history, and roam the impressive Gruta das Torres Cave. Meanwhile, the Azores' second-largest island of Terceira is a must this month. With Angra do Heroísmo as your base, you can take advantage of the warm ocean with a visit to Praia da Vitória and Praia da Riviera, go in search of impérios, colorful temples dotted around the island, and check out the otherworldly landscapes at Furnas do Enxofre.

What to Do

With slightly fewer crowds than the previous months but just as frequent ferries, flights, and excursions, September is a great time to go in search of hidden beaches and beautiful landscapes. Pleasant temperatures are ideal for hiking, and those up for a challenge can tackle the 7,713 feet (2,351 m) high Mount Pico or stick to lower ground and hike the Trilho das Vinhas de Criação Velha trail.

Wildlife lovers can take advantage of the calm and warm waters on a dolphin and whale watching cruise. If you're lucky, you'll spot migrating pilot whales, striped dolphins, and the year-round residents, including the common and bottlenose dolphins. Or, don a snorkel and mask and search for tropical fish in the clear waters around the Vila Franca Islet.

If you'd like to get to know the unique culture and traditions of the Azores, spend time in Ponta Delgada and visit the impressive São Sebastião Church and the 16-century Nossa Senhora da Esperança Convent. On Terceira Island, the UNESCO-listed Angra do Heroísmo is a must-visit, famous for its colonial-style buildings and charming local restaurants. Or, head off the beaten path, and visit Horta on Faial Island, known for its picturesque Old Town and yacht-dotted marina.
