As members of 1% for the Planet, we're proud to announce our 2026 Climate Initiative partners—supporting reforestation in Argentina, sustainable tourism in South Africa, and open space preservation in our hometown of Boulder, Colorado.

About the kimkim Climate Initiative

At kimkim, we believe travel can be a powerful force for good. Since joining 1% for the Planet in 2025, we've deepened our commitment to supporting environmental causes while continuing to fund impactful local initiatives through our global network of specialists.

Our Climate Initiative is built on the belief that sustainable travel requires both global perspective and local action. By partnering with organizations working on the ground, we ensure that every trip we plan makes a meaningful difference in protecting the destinations our travelers love.

Our 2026 Partners

This year, we're proud to support three organizations doing critical sustainability work across three continents.

ReforestArg

Restoring Argentina's Native Forests

Building on our ongoing partnership, we continue to support ReforestArg (Fundación para Cuidar al Planeta y sus Habitantes) in their mission to restore Argentina's degraded native forests. In 2026, our funding will support the planting of 50,000 native trees in protected natural areas of Chubut Province—regions devastated by the 2015 forest fires.

ReforestArg's work goes beyond planting trees. They're leading a cultural shift in how Argentines think about environmental care, working on both public lands, such as national parks and reserves, and private properties. Their focus on reforestation with native species in degraded ecosystems ensures that restored areas of high ecological value can thrive for generations to come.

ETC Africa & Wilderness Leadership School

Sustainable Tourism in South Africa

We're excited to launch a new partnership with ETC Africa and the Wilderness Leadership School (WLS), a South African nonprofit with over 60 years of conservation leadership. Together, they're implementing the kimkim Climate Action Pilot Program, designed to help tourism play a more constructive role in addressing climate change.

The pilot has been shaped in close collaboration with The Eco-Travel Boutique, which works closely with the participating properties and brings a long-standing commitment to responsible tourism. The 25 properties are chosen because they're well known and frequently booked by kimkim travelers, grounding the program in trusted relationships and a shared appetite to understand impacts and improve over time.

The yearlong initiative begins with onboarding and training workshops that introduce carbon footprinting as a practical sustainability metric, followed by baseline carbon assessments conducted by ETC Africa to establish tailored benchmarks and carbon budgets for each property.

Capacity building sits at the core of the program. Through virtual sessions and in-person cluster workshops, accommodation champions learn to measure and report emissions, implement reduction strategies, and communicate their efforts to guests. The program also supports localized, nature-based contribution projects, including community engagement, tree propagation, and education initiatives.

By the end of the year, participating accommodations receive a Climate Badge and guest-facing storytelling assets to share their sustainability journey. This partnership reflects our belief that thoughtfully designed tourism can influence behavior, build awareness, and support conservation economies at scale.

Boulder Open Space Conservancy

Protecting Our Home

Guarded by the iconic Flatirons, Boulder’s open spaces are preserved through the work of BOSC

As a Boulder, Colorado-based company, we're proud to support the Boulder Open Space Conservancy (BOSC) in its mission to preserve and enhance open spaces in Boulder for current and future generations. This partnership brings our climate commitment closer to home, supporting the protection of the landscapes that inspire us daily.

Through this sponsorship, we're contributing to BOSC's ongoing work to protect trails, meadows, and wild spaces across Boulder County. We'll also be collaborating with BOSC to amplify conservation and sustainability messaging, helping spread awareness about the importance of protecting open spaces. Their efforts remind us that conservation starts in our own backyard—and that the places we love are worth fighting for.

How Our Climate Fund Works

Our Climate Initiative is collaborative by design. The per-traveler climate fee is split between you, kimkim, and your local specialist to support local conservation projects. When you book a trip, your contribution is automatically added to the trip price—and kimkim and your local specialist match it.

In addition to our commitment as members of 1% for the Planet, we dedicate a portion of our climate fund to sustainability initiatives led by our local specialists through an annual competitive grant process.

Looking Ahead

We remain inspired by the possibilities of sustainable travel. By continuing to partner with 1% for the Planet, invest in local conservation projects across three continents, and empower communities worldwide, we're committed to ensuring that travel becomes a force for positive change.

The journey toward a more sustainable future requires collective effort, innovation, and a deep respect for the planet we all share. Thank you for traveling with us—and for being part of the solution.
