What you'll do

Experience the amazing bioluminescence of Costa Rica's Paquera Bay on this unique kayak activity. You'll be able to explore the glowing water in a double kayak as your guide leads you to all the best spots.

The experience begins after sunset with a briefing and information on bioluminescence and how the excursion works. Once the sky is dark, travelers are taken down to the beach and assisted into their kayaks. You'll then spend about an hour out on the water, paddling in the darkness and exploring the bioluminescence created by the microorganisms in the water. Keep an eye out for a "shooting star" – a fish swimming through the bioluminescence and creating a quick streak of light in the water. Depending on the day and conditions, you may also be able to get out of your kayak and walk on the beach to see your footsteps light up in the sand!

The activity is available three weeks out of every month to ensure the best viewing conditions for the experience, as moonlight makes it difficult to see the bioluminescence shimmer beneath the water. The darker the night, the better. Each group will have a guide, and all participants will be in either solo or double kayaks. Photographing the bioluminescence can be extremely difficult, so travelers should come for the experience and memories rather than photos. However, there may be some opportunities to capture the bioluminescence on camera and the guides will let you know when the time is right to snap a photo.

Your guide will make plenty of stops during the experience to explain more about the glowing phenomenon and to point out other marine life living in the bay. Fresh water and towels will be waiting for you when you return to shore after your bioluminescent adventure.
