What you'll do

Immerse yourself in the unique Guanacaste landscape with a private Guanacaste Wildlife Safari & Rum Tasting Tour. Your adventure begins with a pick-up at your hotel, where you'll be taken to a family-owned "hacienda" or ranch. Upon arrival, you'll be welcomed with a spread of tropical fruits in the courtyard, where you can enjoy your refreshing snack and a cup of fresh coffee or tea while taking in the scenic views.

Next, head to the boat dock to embark on a private boat safari in the wetlands. While located along the Tempisque River, the area you'll be exploring today is privately owned by Hacienda El Viejo, ensuring a tranquil and exclusive experience. As your expert captain guides the boat along the river banks, you'll have many unforgettable wildlife encounters. Keep your camera ready to capture sightings of an incredible number of tropical bird species, such as rose spoon-billed storks or the mythical Jabirú stork. You'll also likely spot many reptiles, such as crocodiles, frogs, iguanas, and white-faced capuchin monkeys.

After your boat safari, head back to land for a rum tour and tasting. Hacienda El Viejo is surrounded by sugarcane crops, and you'll learn about every step of creating high-quality rum from pure sugar cane. First, you'll view the traditional extraction and cooking techniques used to prepare sugar cane juice. Then, you'll head to the distillery to learn about the fermentation and distillation process, followed by a tour of the Rickhouse, where the rum is aged in beautiful oak barrels to improve the taste. Finally, end the tour with a delicious cocktail made with aged Sabandi Rum. Take your cocktail outside to enjoy stunning views of exotic birds nesting and feeding along the banks of the lagoon for the perfect ending to your experience.

This was our favorite experience of our trip. Our guide Minor was amazing, very knowledgeable as well as personable. He was able to point out all the wildlife and give us information about the ecosystem and interactions of the flora and fauna. The food at Hacienda was fresh and delicious. Before going to the river you can stop for fruit, coffee or juice. The lunch was great as well. All the staff was friendly. The rum experience was also great with Roberto. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. You get to see the process from the sugarcane, to the barrel. You can then infuse your own rum with a variety of spices and fruits. If you like your infusion you can even buy a small bottle to bring home with a personalized label. The Hacienda grounds were clean and beautiful.
