Boat Tour & Rum Tasting at Hacienda El Viejo in Guanacaste

Enjoy a visit to a family-owned hacienda (or ranch) just northeast of Tamarindo Bay, where you'll explore private wetlands teeming with wildlife and learn about the Guanacaste region's culture and traditions. Upon arrival, the family will welcome you with a spread of tropical fruits in their property's courtyard. Enjoy refreshing snacks along with a cup of coffee or tea as you relish scenic views over the unique Guanacaste landscape.

Next, it's time to head to the dock to embark on a boat safari through the wetlands. Keep your camera ready, as you'll have many unforgettable wildlife encounters to capture along the way! Though located along the Tempisque River like the famous Palo Verde National Park, the area you'll explore is privately owned by Hacienda El Viejo. As a result, you'll encounter few (if any) other boats on the water with you.

As your expert captain guides the boat along the river banks, enjoy sightings of an incredible number of tropical bird species, such as rose spoon-billed storks or the mythical Jabirú stork. You'll likely spot many reptiles, too, including crocodiles, frogs, and iguanas. White-faced capuchin monkeys are also a common sight.

Next, it's time to head back to land for a rum tour and tasting. Located in the middle of the grass plains of Guanacaste, sugarcane crops surround the hacienda. Prepare your senses to experience every step of creating high-quality rum from pure sugar cane. First, view the traditional extraction and cooking techniques used to prepare the sugar cane juice. Then, head to the distillery and learn about the fermentation and distillation processes, followed by a tour of the Rickhouse, where the rum is aged in beautiful oak barrels to improve the taste.

You'll end the tour with a delicious cocktail made with aged Sabandi Rum. Then, take your cocktail outside to enjoy stunning views of exotic birds nesting and feeding along the banks of the lagoon for the perfect ending to your experience.
