Fresh-baked rye bread with Icelandic butter
What you'll do
This delightful geothermal baking experience takes place on the shores of Lake Laugarvatn, at the Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths. After greeting your local expert guide, join them on a walk down to the water's edge as they share fascinating stories about the region, its unique volcanic landscape, and its time-honored culinary traditions. Learn how the area relies on the lake's natural geothermal energy, and hear about its history of settlements dating back over 1,000 years.
Then it's time to witness the remarkable process of baking traditional rye bread using Iceland's geothermal heat. Watch as the tin is dug up from the steaming black sands, where it was buried for 24 hours, and enjoy a slice served hot and paired with rich, creamy Icelandic butter. Take in panoramic views over the tranquil lake and watch steam rise from the warm waters as you savor your sweet, dense treat, then say your goodbyes at the end of the 30-40-minute experience.
