Overview

Perfect for adventure seekers and nature lovers, this full-day excursion takes you deep into the dramatic landscapes of Þórsmörk (Thórsmörk) with the help of an expert guide and a specially adapted Super Jeep. You'll glimpse areas of the remote nature reserve only accessible by 4WD, stopping along the way for short hikes to spot wildlife and seek out natural caves and hidden waterfalls. Cross unbridged rivers and traverse rugged terrain as your expert guide points out the ancient ice caps of "Thor's Valley" and shares local stories and legends you won't find in any guidebooks.

What you'll do

Your day of epic, off-road adventures begins at Midgard Base Camp, where you'll meet your experienced local guide and the rest of your small group and board a specially adapted Super Jeep, designed to tackle the rugged terrain and unbridged rivers of Thórsmörk. Your driver and guide will tailor the day to suit the weather and road conditions, but you can expect to traverse a series of valleys nestled between three ice caps (Mýrdalsjökull, Tindfjallajökull, and Eyjafjallajökull) and braided with rushing rivers.

Along the way, you'll likely stop by some of the area's most beautiful waterfalls, like the hidden Nauthúsagil, or stretch your legs with short hikes to discover lava caves or spot local wildlife like arctic foxes and rock ptarmigans. One of the highlights of the day is a visit to the glacier tongue of Gígjökull, where you'll see the aftermath of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption and hear fascinating local anecdotes and insights from your guide that you won't find in any guidebook.

Game of Thrones fans might recognize the scenery as you venture into the mysterious Stakkholtsgjá canyon, with its famous hiking trail and rock walls that rise over 300 feet (90 m), while photography enthusiast will want to keep their cameras handy for the scenic lookout point at Valahnúkur, a 3,280-foot (1,000 m) summit that offers far-reaching views over the surrounding valleys. After a picnic stop for a boxed lunch and more off-road exploration, your driver will head back to the Midgard Base Camp, where you'll say your goodbyes and part ways with your group.

Tips for future travelers

Hard to hear the guide if you aren't sitting near them. We just smiled and enjoyed the views from the backseats.

Tips for future travelers

The hike up the mountain was amazing for the views, but not for someone not in shape. We are in shape late 60’s and found it challenging, but doable, and worth it. Those who didn’t want to do the hike were transported in the jeep to the other side of the hike. We also went to a “secret” waterfall where at one point we had to climb up inside a cave by chain to get to the next waterfall. Not easy, but so worth it! The guide also helped get those who wanted to see it to that second waterfall.

We hold this experience at the very top of our 12-day trip highlights. Midgard is a family operation with a deep commitment to sustainability and treating the community in which they live and work with the utmost respect.

Tips for future travelers

Bring all the items you listed and be ready to put on or take off layers before boarding the Jeep. After inquiring about the conditions where we were going to be for the day, I had too many layers on and removed a bottom base layer before leaving the base camp.

This is an experience not to miss. Our 8-hour trip on dirt, often muddy, roads, through rivers, and to places a car would have a difficult time going, was amazing. We saw the absolute beauty of souther Iceland. Our guide, Isaac, was friendly and knowledgeable. He talked with us about the culture, history, and geography of Iceland. I learned much more about Iceland that I would otherwise know and I left the trip with a sense of natural beauty that makes Iceland a very special place. Read more

There were flush toilets where we had lunch in the valley. It was unexpected and a pleasant surprise.
