Hike to the Russian Border, Kirkenes

What you'll do

Beginning with pickup in Kirkenes, it's a roughly 15-minute drive south into the historic Pasvik Valley—a unique geographical wedge where the boreal forest of Siberia meets northern Scandinavia—and to the trailhead. You'll receive a brief orientation to the route and essential rules for the border zone before setting off along the well-marked trail across mossy forest floors, low-lying wetlands, and rocky ridges of open tundra. There's even the chance of glimpsing reindeer and ptarmigan.

As you make your way toward NATO's northernmost land border—a roughly 123-mile (198 km) stretch of watchtowers, surveillance equipment, and border patrols—your guide will introduce you to the history of this unusual corner of Norway, from the Cold War to present-day life on Russia's doorstep. Upon reaching the Pasvik River, which forms part of the natural boundary between the two countries, you'll see historic Boris Gleb, a Russian Orthodox church used for border demarcation in 1826. Next, you'll come across historic Skafferhullet, a now-closed border crossing point that grants river and old guard tower views.

The trail then climbs steadily toward a panoramic high point, where the wilderness opens onto the border corridor, a cleared strip of land running along the international boundary that lets you see the yellow Norwegian and red-and-green Russian border markers tracking across the hills. It's here that you're standing at the edge of Schengen Europe.

You'll next climb to a nearby viewpoint and relax with a hot drink and restorative snack while taking in the surrounding tundra. If conditions and the group's energy allow, you can scramble up Russehøgda, a 394-foot (120 m) hill with wraparound views across the borderlands and toward Storskog, the only legal land crossing between Norway and Russia and Norway's only external Schengen land border. When it's time, you'll retrace your route back to your vehicle for the short return drive to Kirkenes.
