Winter Arctic Cabin Day Trip with Sauna, Campfire & Northern Lights, Kirkenes

Embrace cabin life with a wood-fired sauna and snowy cooldowns, campfire venison, and a chance to witness the aurora borealis.

Overview

Experience a quintessentially Norwegian evening in the Pasvik Valley, which combines a wood-fired sauna, a campfire meal, and the chance to see the northern lights. Travel from Kirkenes into the wilderness, then ride by snowmobile-pulled sled across a frozen lake, or via snowshoes for added adventure, to a secluded lodge surrounded by forest. Grill venison sausages over the fire, warm up in a traditional sauna, and cool down in the snow between sessions. Far from city lights in a certified Dark Sky area, you'll also be well positioned to watch for the dancing auroras overhead.

What you'll do

Your snow-filled adventure begins with pickup in Kirkenes and a scenic 20-minute drive toward the Pasvik Valley, a remote region of forests, lakes, and Arctic wilderness near Norway's border with Finland and Russia. From here, you'll leave the road behind and climb aboard a snowmobile-pulled sled for the final leg of the journey. Bundle up for the roughly 5-10-minute ride across a frozen lake—or through the forest if you want more of a challenge, opt to hike using snowshoes, about an hour each way—before arriving at Namdalen Wilderness Lodge, a secluded cabin tucked amid the quiet taiga forests of Pasvik.

While the wood-fired sauna heats up, gather around the campfire to grill reindeer sausages and sip hot drinks. As you eat, listen to your hosts share stories and insights about the surrounding landscape, its wildlife, and everyday life in Northern Norway. Then, it's time to embrace Norwegian sauna culture. Step inside the rustic, traditionally built sauna and settle into the warmth before heading outdoors to cool down. And repeat. If you're feeling adventurous, trade the heat for the snow and attempt a snow angel before retreating to the sauna again. At the end of your session, you can bathe inside the sauna, using a bucket and ladle.

Throughout the evening, keep an eye on the sky. The Pasvik region is home to Norway's first certified Dark Sky Park, with minimal light pollution creating excellent conditions for stargazing and spotting the northern lights phenomenon. Aurora borealis sightings depend on weather and solar activity and can't be guaranteed, but the remote setting gives you a strong chance to experience the Arctic night sky at its darkest.

After an evening of fireside food, sauna heat, snowy cooldowns, and—with a little luck—the northern lights dancing overhead, you'll make the journey back across the frozen lake and return to Kirkenes.
