What you'll do

Embark on a unique and fascinating journey through the community of Tortuguero, a wildlife haven in the Caribbean region, as you immerse yourself in the local culture and history. With a knowledgeable bilingual naturalist guide at your side, you'll spend two hours exploring the area and engaging with its residents to get an authentic perspective on their way of life.

Your journey begins with a look back at the early settlers of the region, including the Zambo-Miskito Indians and escaped slaves who relied on subsistence farming, turtle-hunting, and cacao plantation raiding to survive. You'll then learn about the Jamaican immigrants who arrived later to work on the regional railroad, lumber companies, and fruit plantations. The seasonal migrations of sea turtles brought 19th-century sailors to the Tortuguero coastline, who traded turtle meat, oil, and shells in Europe.

Today, the 1,500-strong community of Tortuguero has shifted its focus from turtle hunting to turtle conservation and ecotourism. Most residents work in tourism and conservation-related industries, making the community a pioneer for ecotourism in Costa Rica. You'll witness firsthand how the town's efforts to preserve its unique culture, ecosystems, and wildlife have set a blueprint for ecotourism across the country and beyond.

Throughout this excursion, you'll gain a comprehensive understanding of the region's rich history and culture, as well as the importance of the local wildlife. As you interact with community members, you'll learn about their present-day endeavors and the undeniable impact of their conservation efforts.

Please note that visiting Tortuguero at night is not recommended due to the lack of street lighting, making it dark and potentially unsafe. Stick to daytime exploration to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in this charming Caribbean town.

The visit to the village was nice. I think we were just exhausted from the travel that we would have liked to be able to get settled in a bit more before we had to go on the guided visit. Also because it is not the busy tourist season, it was a bit sparse and we probably would have been ok if we stayed for only an hour instead of the full two hours. Read more

I would recommend this tour for those who are looking to buy souvenirs mainly. There were plenty of souvenir shops. There were also a few bars and restaurants to chill at, but we weren't hungry at that point.

We enjoyed our time at the village. Saw several cool frogs during a nocturnal walk. Were able to see a turtle emerging from its nest and scramble to the sea. Read more

Cute town, I wouldn't recommend going at night. No street lights and it would be very dark and unsafe.

I loved the town. I would’ve liked to have been able to travel here by myself to grab food or drinks, but unfortunately since it is part of your hotel stay you can’t just make arrangements and have to go when they arrange it. Read more
