What you'll do

Your visit begins at the Jaguar Rescue Center, located just a few miles from the laid-back Caribbean surf town of Puerto Viejo. Founded in 2008, the center is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and protecting Costa Rica's wildlife. During your 1.5-hour visit, you'll walk through the sanctuary alongside a knowledgeable guide who will introduce you to the animals currently under care.

As you explore the grounds, you'll encounter a variety of native species—from playful monkeys and slow-moving three-toed sloths to colorful toucans, macaws, and even snakes and other reptiles. Your guide will share the unique story behind each animal, explaining how they were rescued and the challenges they face in the wild, from habitat loss to human-wildlife conflict. You'll also learn about the center's rehabilitation process and how many animals are eventually released back into protected areas, including the nearby La Ceiba Primary Forest Reserve.

The experience offers a deeper understanding of Costa Rica's impressive biodiversity and the ongoing efforts required to protect it. By visiting, you're directly supporting the center's conservation work and helping provide care for animals in need.

Tips for future travelers

There are no Jaguars per se at this place, so the name is a misnomer.

We used rental banana bikes from our hotel to get to the tour. It was soaking rain, but part of the experience!
