Lima Food Tour, Lima

5.0 (12 reviews)

Overview

One of the best ways to discover Peru's capital city of Lima is through its food. With an eclectic combination of indigenous, African, Asian, and European culinary influences, Lima is one of the world's most impressive gastronomic and cultural centers. This food tour begins early in Lima's historic center with a visit a local mercado (market) to taste the local produce, sample spices, and enjoy some fresh-baked bread.

Other highlights of the tour include attending a cooking class and preparing traditional ceviche, a dish of fresh seafood marinated with salt and lime juice, as well as a pisco sour—a Peruvian classic cocktail. In fact, part of the tour involves tasting different types of piscos, a high-proof local brandy made from grapes. There's also a stop for lunch at one of Lima's top restaurants to enjoy a delicious meal on a patio overlooking the Pacific ocean. Finally, it's a short stroll to the bohemian district of Barranco, a popular oceanside neighborhood, for a relaxed afternoon drinking coffee and sampling Peruvian desserts like tres leches cake.

Amy conducted a good food tour. She was friendly, fun and informative. I liked the market visit very much. It is always fascinating to learn about unfamiliar foods and she did a good job and I’m glad she included the fish monger. I loved all of the stops that were included and the last stop for a large meal was so good I wish I had a doggy bag for leftovers.
I have to say that calling it a “cooking class” is a stretch. I would be fine if it were not billed as such and just listed as the...

Tips for future travelers

Eat a light breakfast. It was pretty funny, Amy asked each couple if they had eaten breakfast and all of us had. She was surprised. There is plenty of food on the tour.

Food market was great. Lots of fruits and veggies I had never seen before. Amy provided a box with a nice selection of fruits to try. She described and explained them all. Also great to make a stop at the fish monger.
