What you'll do
This 90-minute walk begins when you meet your private guide at Aldgate East Station, located at the heart of London's vibrant East End. Venture into the streets of Whitechapel and Spitalfields as your guide (a lifelong Londoner and witty storyteller) sets the scene by explaining how this modern, multicultural area has changed since the Victorian era, when it was a byword for poverty, overcrowding, and crime—and most famously, the haunt of Jack the Ripper.
Instead of sensationalizing the notorious murderer and his crimes, you'll focus instead on his victims: Mary Ann "Polly" Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly (known as the "Canonical Five"). Retrace the footsteps of the women's day-to-day lives—from the Whitechapel washhouses to the churchyard of Christ Church Spitalfields—pausing at key Ripper investigation sites like The Ten Bells pub and Mitre Square as your guide's engrossing, theatrical stories bring the gaslit alleys and fog-drenched cobblestones of Victorian London to life.
As you weave past brick tenements and renovated warehouses, you'll also learn more about the neighborhood's history and architecture, and discover its pivotal role in the fight for social change and better conditions for working-class women during the era. Pass Hanbury Hall as you hear how Annie Besant and Sarah Chapman organized the 1888 Match Girls' Strike, and pause at the gates of Toynbee Hall to discover how this pioneering social project still helps serve the community today. The experience wraps up back at Aldgate East, where you'll say your goodbyes and part ways with your guide.
