What you'll do

Make sure to bring a packed lunch—you're off for a full-day hike along one of Britain's most dramatic coastal trails. Begin by meeting your private guide at Victoria Station and catching a 1.5-hour train to the South Coast town of Seaford. From here, you'll set off east, following a 14-mile (22 km) stretch of the South Downs Way. The intermediate-to-challenging route hugs chalk cliffs and descends to rocky beaches, with a few steep ascents in between. With the help of your accredited hiking guide, you'll follow the safest paths, pause for the best views, and learn about the coast's history and ecology along the way.

It's a steep first climb above the historic port of Seaford, but you'll be rewarded with wide-open views across the English Channel as you reach the summit. Next, the trail rises and falls along the chalk cliffs before descending to Cuckmere Haven, where the River Cuckmere meanders through a protected coastal estuary to reach the sea. You'll divert inland to cross the river, and break for your packed lunch (not included) near the visitor center, where you can learn more about the nature reserve's protected chalk grasslands, full of rare orchids, butterflies, and birds.

The next leg of your journey sees you rejoin the South Downs Way as you enter Seven Sisters Country Park and make another climb to Cliff End. Trace the clifftops along the iconic Seven Sisters, listening as your guide explains how the cliffs' white chalk is continuously changing due to erosion and wind. After passing the shingle beach at Birling Gap (where you can stop at the café or grab a coffee), you'll know you're nearing the last stretch when you spot Belle Tout Lighthouse and continue to Beachy Head, the highest chalk cliff in Britain.

From here, it's one long, final descent into Eastbourne, where you'll link up with the Victoria Promenade as you stroll past this historic seaside resort's shingle beach and Victorian architecture. You'll have the option of putting your feet up and celebrating your achievement with some fish and chips or dinner at a historic pub (not included), before catching the train back to London for a well-earned sleep.
