What you'll do
Grab your best walking shoes, pack some sandwiches, and join your private accredited hiking guide at London Bridge Station, where they'll help you catch a 25-minute train south to Sevenoaks, a prosperous market town surrounded by the ancient landscapes of the Kentish Weald. Upon arrival, you'll set off on a five-hour, 10.5-mile (16.8 km) hiking route that starts with a walk along the town's charming high street before shifting to rural fields and forests. This marks your approach to Knole, an imposing Jacobean manor set within a 1,000-acre (405 ha) medieval deer park.
As you follow trails and tracks through the estate's parkland, valleys, and woodlands, your guide will share stories of Knole House's 600-year history. First built by the 15th-century Archbishop of Canterbury, the property was later gifted to the Sackville family by Elizabeth I; today, it's owned by the National Trust, though the family still occupies portions of the vast, 365-room house. Keep an eye out for fallow deer herds, which have grazed this parkland since the 15th century, and listen for the diverse birdlife that thrives in the park's ancient forests.
Your hike continues east across the estate to link up with portions of the Greensand Way (a long-distance walking path that stretches from Surrey to Kent), then continues to another National Trust property: Ightham Mote. You won't go inside the grounds of this well-preserved 14th-century medieval manor house, but you'll have time to break for your packed lunch (not included) or grab a coffee or tea from the on-site café.
Refreshed and refueled, it's time for the final leg of your journey, rejoining the Greensand Way for the gentle climb up to One Tree Hill, where you'll be rewarded with sweeping views over the Kentish Weald. Wind down with a scenic walk back through Knole Park, following the stately Chestnut Walk and catching one last spectacular view of the historic house. Then it's time to continue back into Sevenoaks, catch the return train to London, and part ways with your guide.
