What you'll do
This full-day adventure begins when you meet your private guide at London's Fenchurch Street Station, where they'll help you catch a 50-minute train east to Leigh-on-Sea. Located at the mouth of the Thames Estuary in eastern Essex, this traditional fishing town was once one of the country's busiest working harbors. Today, it's still filled with fishing boats returning with the day's catch, plus plenty of weekend visitors drawn to its independent shops, art galleries, and traditional seafood joints.
Upon arrival, you'll set off on a five-hour, 10.5-mile (17 km) hike across varied terrain, traversing seaside paths and woodland trails accompanied by your accredited hiking guide. Start with a slow ascent from the coastal lowlands to the Belton Hills Nature Reserve, a 63-acre (25 ha) green space with dramatic views over the estuary. Continuing west, you'll link up with a portion of the Saffron Trail, a long-distance walking route named for Essex's historic crocus fields.
The hike continues toward the romantic ruins of Hadleigh Castle. Pause to explore the 13th-century fortress as your guide shares stories of its history (including its past as a favorite haunt of Edward III and a lookout tower for smugglers). Another uphill climb takes you to the green slopes of Adders Hill, then it's on to Hadleigh Country Park, where you'll cross woodland, meadows, and marshland as your guide points out darting dragonflies and rare plants.
Take a break to enjoy your packed lunch (not included) or a cup of tea at the on-site café, then descend to the water's edge at Benfleet Creek. You'll pass boats of all shapes and sizes bobbing along the estuary banks before cutting across Two Tree Island to arrive back in Leigh-on-Sea's well-preserved center (known as Old Leigh). Stroll among the cobbled streets and traditional cockle sheds or stop for some fresh-caught seafood and a well-earned drink (not included) before heading back to the station for the return train to London.
