What you'll do
Your easy-to-moderate hike to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) begins with an early pick-up from your accommodation in Stavanger. You'll meet your guide and enjoy scenic views of fjords and the Norwegian countryside, interspersed with driving through the Ryfylketunnelen, the world's longest and deepest undersea tunnel at 8.9 miles (14.4 km) long, as you make your way to the Preikestolen Lodge trailhead.
Upon arriving at the starting point, your guide will brief you on what to expect and set you up with appropriate gear. The hike itself is 2.5 miles (4 km) one way, taking 4-6 hours in total. The well-marked trail winds through mountainous landscapes, gradually ascending 1,640 feet (500 m) to the granite platform, which sits 1,981 feet (604 m) above sea level. Some areas may be slippery depending on the weather, so you'll need solid hiking boots and, of course, weather-appropriate clothing. As you'll pass through Norwegian pine trees, fields of granite boulders, and alongside pristine lakes like Tjødnane, there'll also be plenty of opportunities for a photo op.
Once you make it to the iconic platform, you'll be rewarded with the panoramic views that make the hike so popular, and will have plenty of time to soak up the Lysefjord scenery, snap pics, and enjoy a bite to eat. Your guide will be on hand to share interesting facts and explain some of the site's history. When it's time, you'll start your descent, arriving at the trailhead for the transfer back to Stavanger, returning to your accommodation around 3 pm or 5 pm (depending on your chosen start time).
