What you'll do

Begin your adventure by meeting your guide and instructor on Strand von Flåm, the beach in Flåm, where you'll receive a thorough introduction to sea kayaking. Safety is a priority, so your experienced guide will ensure you feel comfortable and confident before hitting the water. Once you're ready, you'll push off from the beach and begin paddling into the calm waters of the Aurlandsfjord.

As you glide through the fjord, you'll pass the Otternes Bygdetun farmyard, a historic cluster of 27 buildings from the 1700s that overlook the Auralandsfjord from their hilly perch. Listen as your guide shares stories of the settlement and its people to help you gain a fascinating insight into the culture and history of the Aurland area. Continuing your journey, you'll make your way toward Fronnes, where ancient Viking grave mounds and archaeological remains await.

The entire trip lasts around three hours, giving you ample time to soak in the natural beauty and tranquility of the fjord landscape. Keep an eye out for wildlife—if lucky, you might spot seals, otters, or even porpoises in the water. The excursion is designed to be enjoyable for everyone, regardless of previous kayaking experience.

Did not provide supports for seating so whole time your back is being dug into by rim of kayak, at least three people were complaining and guide never took breaks. Very uncomfortable experience Read more

We were lucky enough to be the only folks on the tour the afternoon we did it. The guide let us take as slow or as fast as we wanted to and was very knowledgeable about the fjord and answered all my kids questions! Read more

The Summer Kayaking Excursion in Flam was our top favorite activity of the trip. Although it wasn't initially recommended to us, I asked about it, and I'm so glad we got to do it. It was an incredible experience to paddle through the fjord and take in the stunning scenery from the water. Truly unforgettable!

This was the one activity of the trip that I would definitely skip. There was nothing wrong with the excursion. The vendor did a fine job. But since we got to see the fjord from the water two other times as part of the RIB excursion later that day and then the next day from the "Norway in a Nutshell" ferry, I would have rather used that half day to go to the famous Stegastein overlook, walk to the Flam church, or go on another hike. If you are going on the RIB tour and/or the ferry, I would not do this excursion. You do not get very far on the kayacks and you can appreciate the fjord from the ground as well as on the ferry/RIB ride if you are going on it.

Not worth the time. Do something else instead.

I'm a kimkim staff member and I was on a work trip when I experienced the Summer Kayaking Excursion. I'm a kimkim staff member and I was on a work trip when I experienced the Summer Kayaking Excursion. My guide, Patryk, was a fantastic German exchange traveler who actually lived about 10-minutes from where I spent some time living in Stuttgart! He was a great guide who helped everyone tremendously, gave informative knowledge about the fjord, the waterfalls we passed, Flåm, the city of Aurland we passed, and a sunken WWII battleship that could be dove to if you’re certified! Patryk and I talked for a bit after, he suggested a couple waterfalls that I could hike to from Flåm, and we plan to connect when he visits Colorado at the end of next summer for a kayaking trip.

Tips for future travelers

One minor note is that this experience does not allow you to solo kayak, you have to do duo’s - if you’re alone, you will be paired up with a stranger; I was paired up with the older mother of a couple and she was extremely nice, talkative, but I had to do 90% of the rowing (great workout that I didn’t mind because of my fitness level but just something to note for other travelers).
