Vatnajökull Glacier Hike, Hof

3.0 (1 reviews)

Overview

Vatnajökull is Europe's largest glacier, set in southern Iceland above the town of Hof along the country's famed Ring Road. Along with its numerous outlet glaciers, Vatnajökull covers over 2 million acres (8100 km2). Expert guides will help you get acquainted with your equipment, discover the glacier history, and teach you some basic safety strategies. Afterward, you'll head on a moderate hike atop the scenic Vatnajökull Glacier!

In the science world, glaciers are considered "living," as in they are continuously changing. For this reason, exploring Vatnajökull will be a unique experience, immersing you in surreal nature, spectacular surroundings, and streaks of black snow. You'll hike up the glacier's "tongue" to reach the top of the ice cap and enjoy the best views. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to see some of the cracks and blue crevices and learn about the geology behind the phenomenon.

Enjoy time atop the ice cap, taking in the views and catching glimpses of Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland's highest peak.

Discover more unique experiences along the Ring Road and other glacier experiences in Iceland.

It was nice, the staff was nice and experienced. But it was a group of all people: good hikers, amateur hikers... All together. Because of that, it's a simple walk to the first part of the glacier, you don't get very far. For me it felt like I could 've done it without a guide, and would have wanted to go further in with a guide. Read more

Tips for future travelers

If you are an experienced hiker and you are looking for a thrill, I feel it's better to book a private tour, or maybe a small group tour for experienced hikers (I'm not sure if that's an option at all)

Quality of Experience
I wanted to go higher up on the glacier
