What you'll do

Embark on a 4.5-hour whale and dolphin safari cruise in a modern catamaran that will take you around the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. Your adventure begins in Viaduct Basin, conveniently located within walking distance from most accommodations in Central Auckland. There, you'll board the vessel and meet the skipper and scientists, who will lead your journey.

Settle into the expansive open deck, where you can admire Auckland landmarks, such as the Harbour Bridge, North Head, and Devonport, alongside the volcanic Rangitoto Island. As you cruise these waters, you'll have the chance to spot orca and dolphins, which inhabit the inner Waitematā Harbour. Each excursion offers a different viewing experience, as the animals you see depend on the time of year, weather conditions, and other factors. Bryde's whales and common dolphins are likely spottings, and you may also see pygmy blue whales, New Zealand fur seals, sharks, manta rays, turtles, and up to 26 species of seabirds, including the little blue penguin.

Throughout this trip, the knowledgeable crew will offer insights about the area and its wildlife. You can even participate in interactive research activities conducted by the marine biologists on board, so you can gain hands-on experience and understanding of the marine life around Auckland. There's also a cafe and bar on the vessel, so you can enjoy refreshments during the day as you soak in the views, animals, and new information about New Zealand's wildlife. As you head back to Auckland, you can join an optional research presentation to learn more, or just kick back and take in the sight of the approaching harbor.
