Authenticity

Casa Gangotena is a true Quito landmark. Built atop the remains of an Inca palace, it sits at the southwest corner of Plaza de San Francisco, a central square home to some of the city's most important historic sites, including the 16th-century Basilica and Convent of San Francisco. The three-story, colonial-era mansion once housed several presidents, and the original structure was rebuilt and renovated in the 1920s by the city's illustrious Gangotena family. It remained a family home until the 2000s, when it was converted to a luxurious boutique hotel. Its interiors retain the grandeur of its past, including Art Nouveau murals, ornate moulding, inlaid floors, marble columns, and soaring ceilings.

Location

The hotel's spectacular location on Plaza de San Francisco means you'll be perfectly placed to explore the UNESCO-listed Old Town on foot. Restaurants, shopping, and museums are within easy strolling distance (the Casa del Alabado Pre-Columbian Art Museum is just around the corner, and entry is free for hotel guests). The plaza's new Metro station provides easy access to the rest of the city in under 20 minutes, while the Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport is a 45-minute taxi ride away. Free and valet parking is available on-site.

Rooms & Bathrooms

You'll find just 31 air-conditioned rooms and suites spread across three floors, all with high ceilings, large original windows, and sumptuous decor inspired by the building's Art Nouveau details. Even the most basic rooms are larger than average and beautifully decorated, but to make the most of your location, upgrade to a Plaza View room on the north facade for postcard-worthy views of the church bell towers and cobbled square. All rooms include luxurious marble bathrooms with deep bathtubs, large standing showers, fluffy robes, and L'Occitane toiletries. Complimentary in-room treats like fruit, coffee, water, and chocolate are refreshed daily.

Amenities

The hotel's restaurant is a destination for local foodies as well as guests, with an innovative menu of cocina mestiza-inspired dishes that reflect Ecuador's distinct regions and highlight locally sourced ingredients. Breakfast is included in the rate and served buffet-style, with a selection of made-to-order dishes available. You can enjoy a "Quiteñan" high tea experience in the flower-filled inner courtyard, or grab a leather armchair and a glass of local wine in the elegant, wood-paneled bar. Don't miss a trip to the top-floor terrace for a craft cocktail (each named for an Ecuadorian festival) and panoramic views of Quito's historic cityscape; on clear days, you can see as far as the snowcapped Cayambe volcano.

Family-Friendliness

Casa Gangotena welcomes families, and the staff is warm and accommodating to younger guests. Interconnecting rooms are available for larger groups and families, all floors are reached by elevator, and the central location is ideal for sightseeing with kids in tow.
