- Certosa di Pontignano is an ideal base if you want a quiet retreat with easy access to Siena (about a 15-20 minute drive).
- You're staying in a historic charterhouse—this isn't just a hotel; it's a full-on historical experience with cloisters, frescoes, and an early 18th-century chapel, touted as a mini Sienese Sistine Chapel.
- The setting is classic Tuscany: hilltop views over Chianti, peaceful gardens, and total quiet (you'll hear birds more than anything else).
- You'll have a range of room types, from simple doubles to spacious apartments with kitchens.
- Apartments (converted monks' cells) are especially unique, with tons of space, character, and sometimes private gardens.
- The on-site Il Chiostro di Pontignano restaurant serves fresh, handmade pasta and caters to different dietary needs.
- There are a number of atmospheric common spaces to enjoy, including reading rooms, terraces, and cloisters.
- Free parking is on-site, and public EV charging stations are nearby if you're on a road trip through Tuscany.
- Parents can take advantage of the available babysitting services.
- The standard room options are simple, and en-suites feel a little dated.
- The apartments are without air conditioning but are supplied with fans.
- WiFi isn't consistent across such a large property, and the apartments receive a weaker signal.
Authenticity
You can't get much more authentic than a sprawling Carthusian monastery tucked away in the Chianti countryside. Dating to 1343, centuries-old cloisters, an original still-in-use stone well, and the frescoed Chapel of Saint Agnes—often likened to a miniature Sistine Chapel—offer a tangible connection to its austere past, while former monks' cells have been thoughtfully converted into apartments, preserving their original character, many with a small garden. Interiors feature antique furnishings and period decor, and many of the communal halls retain historic elements like grand fireplaces and frescoed walls, painted by well-known artists of the day, including Florentine painter Bernardino Poccetti.
Location
Perched on a hill in a remote part of the Chianti countryside, Certosa strikes a balance between seclusion and accessibility. You're surrounded by rolling hills of vineyards and olive groves, historic towns with ancient stone buildings, and a soundtrack of birdsong, yet close enough to dip into Siena's historic center in around 15 minutes or San Gimignano in less than an hour, with a handful of restaurants and wineries scattered in between. Shuttle service can be arranged to and from the Florence airport (about 70 minutes away), and there's parking on-site or EV charging stations nearby for those with rentals.
Rooms & Bathrooms
Five individual accommodation types range from simple, modern rooms with more everyday furnishings (Small, Classic, Comfort) to historically rich suites and spacious apartments carved from former monks' cells. Superior rooms and the Junior Suite in the villa are in the latter category and stand out for their antique furnishings and garden views, while charmingly rustic two- and three-bedroom apartments offer full kitchens, some with private gardens, and all with plenty of space. Tiled bathrooms are straightforward, some more polished than others, some feel a little stuck in the past, and some apartments retain quirks like steep stairs in keeping with the original structure.
Amenities
Certosa functions almost like a self-contained estate, with a restaurant, bar, historic halls, and peaceful common spaces spread across cloisters, two inner courtyards, and gardens. The on-site restaurant, Il Chiostro di Pontignano, highlights Sienese cuisine with house-made pastas and seasonal ingredients (you can book a table from your in-room tablet), while Certosa Bar serves aperitifs with cloister or countryside views from its secluded terrace. Guests can explore reading rooms, frescoed lounges, and terraces, and wander the grounds with a map in hand provided at reception. You'll also have access to practical amenities such as free parking, nearby EV charging, and transport services.
Family-Friendliness
The larger apartments in the Great Cloister sleep up to six and include kitchens and added living spaces. Babysitting services are also available, and the expansive grounds and garden areas offer space for kids to explore. Dining options also cater to a range of needs, including kid-friendly dishes and dietary preferences.
