Overview
Kimkim's Take
- You're sleeping inside living Baroque history with the Borromini-designed palazzo offering up original frescoes, period details, secret rooms, and Borromini's spiral staircase still in use.
- You're mere steps from Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Campo de' Fiori, and within a 30-minute walk of many major sights, with restaurants, cafés, shops, and gelaterias at every turn.
- Select rooms, suites, and the rooftop look straight out to Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Pantheon's dome, St. Peter's, and Rome's rooftops, particularly idyllic at sunset.
- Terrazza Borromini and the sixth-floor rooftop bar are among the most panoramic (and buzzy) spots in the historic center—locals come here for good reason.
- Higher-category rooms showcase frescoed or coffered ceilings, original floors, fireplaces, and marble-lined bathrooms—some (the Spa Suite) even include steam showers or Jacuzzis.
- Not all rooms have views or historic features, and entry-level categories can feel simpler—this is a hotel where it pays to be choosy.
- The historic layout includes steps throughout, making it unsuitable for travelers with mobility concerns.
- Parking isn't available.
Authenticity
Housed in a 17th-century palace designed by Baroque master Francesco Borromini, the palazzo sits atop the remains of Emperor Domitian's ancient stadium and later became the Collegio Innocenziano, commissioned by Pope Innocent X of the powerful Pamphilj family to educate young priests. Original features—frescoed ceilings, coffered woodwork, secret passages, and Borromini's spiral staircase—remain part of daily life here, while stories of papal intrigue and Roman nobility are woven into individual suites.
Location
Set between Via Santa Maria dell'Anima and lively Piazza Navona, the hotel enjoys one of the most iconic addresses in Rome's historic center. Step out the door, and you're within an easy 5-minute stroll of the Pantheon, Campo de' Fiori, and the Tiber River, while the Spanish Steps, Colosseum, and Roman Forum are about a 20-30 minute walk (or a quick bus ride from nearby Corso del Rinascimento). Despite its central setting, the side-street entrance feels surprisingly quiet, with horse-drawn carriages passing by and cafés, gelaterias, and wine bars filling the surrounding streets.
Rooms & Bathrooms
Because the palazzo was never intended to be a hotel, every room and suite is unique—some cozier (Single and Classic Double options), while others are grand and dramatic, featuring frescoed or beamed ceilings, original terracotta floors, fireplaces, and secret architectural quirks. Suites are the real showstoppers, especially those with views over Piazza Navona or preserved historic features tied to the Pamphilj family. Marble-clad bathrooms feel luxurious and well-thought-out, with rain showers (and sometimes tubs), plush robes, heated towel racks, and Maison Guerlain vanity kits. A word to the wise: not all rooms have views, and street noise can vary, so choosing carefully makes a difference here.
Amenities
Amenities lean quality over quantity, with fewer shared lounging spaces but several notable standouts. Terrazza Borromini, the fourth-floor restaurant, serves refined takes on Roman classics in frescoed rooms overlooking Piazza Navona, while the rooftop bar—tucked between the church dome and bell tower—is one of the most panoramic (and popular) cocktail spots in the historic center. There's also a furnished courtyard and an art gallery lining the fourth-floor corridor, and while rooftop seating isn't guaranteed for hotel guests, the views alone make it worth planning ahead.
Family-Friendliness
While the palace's historic layout and romantic atmosphere skew more romantic and culture-focused than kid-centric, families of four can be comfortable in the larger Deluxe and Luxury suites. The stairs and architectural quirks may not be ideal for younger children, and there are no dedicated family amenities, except for the available cots (for an additional charge). Children over two years are charged as adults.
