Hillside designer retreat with spacious rooms, two pools, hot tub, bar, restaurant, spa, and small gym

Overview

Chic Estalagem sits dramatically on the cliffside, overlooking sunny Ponta do Sol, and grants spectacular ocean and mountain panoramas from most anywhere on the property. Visitors stay within walking distance of the village's pebbly beach, palm-lined promenade, and whitewashed streets, while also being well positioned for levada treks, coastal drives, and a day trip to Funchal. Rooms are understated, featuring a monochrome palette, floor-to-ceiling windows, and private balconies that offer views of the sea,  gardens, or village below. Generous amenities include indoor and outdoor pools, a Jacuzzi, a wellness area with gym, sauna, and massage treatments, a restaurant serving local and international fare, and multiple bars, lounges, and terraces designed to make the most of Madeira's famous sunsets.

Pros
  • The cliffside setting is genuinely spectacular; everywhere you turn, there's another ocean, village, or mountain view.
  • Ponta do Sol is one of Madeira's sunniest towns, and the hotel makes the most of it with terraces, panoramic windows, and outdoor lounging areas.
  • The pools (an outdoor infinity pool and an indoor wading pool), Jacuzzi, and restaurant all come with dramatic ocean views.
  • The posh wellness facilities are impressive, where you'll find an indoor pool, a sauna, a steam bath, massage rooms, and yoga offerings.
  • Estalagem hosts cultural events, such as the weekly sunset Purple Friday party, that guests can choose to join or not.
  • You may spot local birds around the grounds and along nearby walks, and you'll surely come across the hotel's two resident dogs.
  • Private parking is available.
  • Numerous outdoor activities are at your fingertips: levada walks, coastal hikes, mountain biking, whale watching, surfing, paragliding, and more.
  • The buffet breakfast is highly rated by past guests, with the ocean views enhancing the experience.
Cons
  • Due to the multi-level layout and the amount of walking required, Estalagem may not be ideal for guests with mobility concerns. That said, rooms are available on both the first and second floors of each building, and there is an accessible garden room.

Authenticity

Estalagem was created from the renovation of an old quinta, and rather than preserving its traditional interiors, Portuguese architect Carvalho Araújo reimagined the property with minimalist black-and-white spaces, light woods, black stone floors, and panoramic windows that frame the surrounding cliffs, ocean, and terraced hillsides. The contemporary architecture itself leverages the island's natural drama by layering the hotel's buildings down the rocky slope in a series of stone walls, bridges, and terraces that mirror the mountainous terrain. Its cultural program, like Purple Fridays, is also a local highlight, bringing guests and the Ponta do Sol community together through carefully selected events.

Location

Set into a cliff above the red-roofs of Ponta do Sol, Estalagem makes the most of one of Madeira's most scenic—and sunniest—coastal villages. You can walk downhill to the village's palm-lined promenade or to the local, pebbled beach in about 5 minutes (or a 15-minute drive to the sandier Calheta beach), and private parking is available for those exploring the island by car. It's about 40 minutes from the airport, 25 minutes from Funchal, and 8 minutes from Ribeira Brava.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Rooms are spacious but simple, with a minimalist black-and-white design that lets the ocean, cliffs, gardens, or village views do the talking via the large panoramic windows. They're spread across two buildings connected to the main areas by elevators and a bridge, and accommodate two guests each. Bathrooms are practical and comfortable, matching the clean, unfussy style of the rooms. There's one accessible garden room and a ramp for entering/exiting the indoor pool.

Amenities

Perks center on the views, from the outdoor infinity pool, poolside Kabo Bar, and ocean-facing hot tub to the glass-fronted restaurant overlooking the village, sea, and banana plantation hills opposite. You'll also have access to an upscale spa that houses a small gym, sauna, steam room, and a decent-sized indoor pool (with views!). You can book massages, including hydro treatments, yoga, and qigong. The restaurant's menu features Mediterranean, vegetarian, local, and international dishes, and the lobby and lounge bar, with its two fireplaces and terrace, is a nice place to catch the sunset. The hotel also offers billiards, bike rentals, courtesy buses to Funchal, levada walks, and help arranging activities around the island.

Family-Friendliness

Kids can stay here, though the hotel caters more to adults. Rooms accommodate two people, and an extra bed (charged for children aged 5 years and older) or a cot (free of charge) must be requested in advance (subject to availability). Note that the cliffside layout involves elevators, bridges, and stairs between buildings, so it may be less convenient for families with strollers or very young kids.
