Historic 14th-century palace that was site of tragic love story, now home to traditional and modern rooms, a spa, two pools, and a restaurant

Overview

History buffs, romantics, and curious travelers will find a treasure trove at Quinta das Lagrimas, a 14th-century palace that was the site of one of history's more tragic love stories. The Portuguese Prince Pedro and Spanish noblewoman Inês de Castro began their forbidden affair on these grounds. Pedro's father, King Alfonso IV, ordered assassins to kill Inês, who became a muse for writers like Ezra Pound and Victor Hugo, who wrote his first play 16 about her. Experience the rich history embedded in these palace walls, just a 10-minute drive or 20-minute walk from the University of Coimbra and the old cathedral.

Take your pick from Palace Rooms in the original building or Spa Rooms in a newer wing. If you're looking for character and charm, Palace Rooms channel a more elegant and historic style of vintage furniture and original details, while Spa Rooms can feel a bit more generic. The two-bedroom Grand Suite is ideal for families or larger groups and includes a palatial style of rich colors and a marble bathroom. The split-level Pedro and Inês Suite is in a medieval tower with a wooden-beamed ceiling, making it perfect for those looking for romance and history.

The hotel's peaceful garden oasis was the setting for Pedro and Inês' love, and if you wander around the grounds, you'll find a red fountain that was "born of her tears," which gave this estate its name. The all-wood library has books reaching up to the ceiling and is a great place to feel the atmosphere. There's an unheated seasonal outdoor swimming pool to cool off in the summer and a soothing spa overlooking the garden, where you can indulge in the heated pool, sauna, or a number of treatments. The restaurant has a shady terrace overlooking the garden, where you can enjoy a meal of tasty local cuisine.

Loved this historic hotel, which was transformed from a palace into 54 distinct rooms! When you drive up, it has a grand entrance lined with trees that opens up to a staircase leading to the hotel. There is ample seating space and lounge areas near the fireplace, perfect for reading, gathering, and relaxing throughout the building and property.

The staff was friendly and allowed us to store our luggage, which was a great convenience. We were also able to check in a little early. The room itself was large and featured historic touches that reflected the royal family that had lived there in the past.

The property features a large area with gardens to explore, a vast outdoor pool, an indoor pool with a Turkish spa, a driving range on-site, fountains, and ponds throughout the grounds.

I am a kimkim staff member and stayed at this hotel during a work trip.

Historic luxury feel throughout the property, lobby, and rooms. A little less historic and some modern touches in the rooms.

It is located one mile from the Coimbra old town and is easily accessible by walking or taking a taxi.
Staff
Accommodated early check-in.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Clean property and rooms!

The hotel is on the opposite side of the river from the town, so it is a bit of a walk to town to get to tours or to see anything. If you don't mind being out a bit more in the outskirts then it's beautiful old hotel that has a lot of history and character to the property. Definitely explore the gardens and property if you stay in this hotel. Read more

This is visually the most beautiful place we stayed. Our room was small but we were only there one night and really didn’t have time to enjoy any of the grounds. Well, I wasn’t in love with it. We had a guide/driver so it was okay but we love to be able to walk into town

Staff
Very accommodating and pleasant, especially the reception area and the bartender.
Cleanliness & Comfort
These bathtubs all over Portugal are death traps for older people especially as there are no grab bars and are so slippery. This was true for all but one place we stayed where there was a walk in shower. Don’t remember which one but that is a real hazard and not just for really old people like me
