Masseria Li Foggi, Gallipoli
Restored 15th-century farmhouse in the Salento countryside, with rustic-chic rooms, a garden pool, traditional Puglian dining, and beaches and Gallipoli nearby
Overview
Kimkim's Take
- Masseria Li Foggi is a quiet countryside escape that's a 10-minute bike ride from some of Salento's most beautiful beaches, like Baia Verde, particularly enjoyable in the quieter months of May, June, and September.
- The rustic-chic interiors retain plenty of historic character, with vaulted ceilings, thick whitewashed stone walls, earthy tones, and wood and wrought-iron furnishings.
- The small outdoor pool is a lovely spot to cool off after a beach day (or on a windy day), with a quiet outdoor space that's great for lounging in the Salento sunshine.
- Complimentary bikes make it easy to reach nearby beaches without the hassle of finding parking in the summer.
- The in-house restaurant serves traditional southern Puglian cuisine, including homemade pasta and local meats, while a la carte breakfasts are enjoyed on a panoramic terrace.
- Spacious Junior and Family Suites come with kitchenettes and separate living areas, though our favorite is the Family Suite Deluxe for its private terrace overlooking the Ionian Sea.
- You'll want a rental car to explore Gallipoli and the wider Salento region, as the masseria's secluded setting isn't within walking distance of town centers, restaurants, or shops.
- The restaurant, reserved strictly for hotel guests, serves dinner only, so on-site dining options are limited to breakfast (included) and evening meals.
- The WiFi can be inconsistent, which is frustrating if you need a reliable connection for work or streaming.
Authenticity
Family-owned Masseria Li Foggi is a 15th-century Salento farmhouse tastefully restored into an idyllic retreat that preserves its Moorish architectural influences and rural character. Interiors blend thick walls, star-vaulted ceilings with warm, earthy-toned textiles (terracotta, pottery, linen, and wooden furnishings), creating a cozy, country-chic space. Historic details remain throughout—one particularly spacious en suite even occupies a former living room, complete with its original fireplace. The on-site restaurant's dinner menu showcases southern Puglia fare, while hands-on pasta-making classes and regional wine and olive oil tastings are bonus ways the masseria (farmhouse) connects you to the region's food culture.
Location
Hidden among the countryside of southern Puglia, Masseria Li Foggi sits on the edge of the Punta Pizzo–Isola di Sant'Andrea Nature Reserve, roughly a half mile to a mile (1-2 km) from the Gulf of Taranto coast. Its secluded setting makes for a nice escape from the busy beaches around nearby Gallipoli, a 10-minute drive away. Though when you're in the mood for some sand and surf fun, there are complimentary bicycles you can borrow to reach beaches like popular Baia Verde, coastal hiking trails, or to explore the surrounding olive groves. A car is useful for venturing farther afield to check out Salento's historic towns, including Lecce, Otranto, and Santa Maria di Leuca, all within 30-50 minutes' drive.
Rooms & Bathrooms
The hotel's 16 rooms and suites are spread between the original farmhouse and the neighboring 20th-century Casina Li Foggi. Expect large, light-filled interiors with warm neutrals and pops of saturated colors, star-vaulted ceilings, natural fabrics, and traditional wood and wrought-iron furnishings. Superior Rooms suit couples, offering furnished shady outdoor terraces, while Junior Suites add separate living areas and kitchenettes. Larger parties can choose from two-bedroom Family Suites with one or two bathrooms, including the property's most exclusive offering, the Deluxe, with its en suite bathrooms, a fireplace, and a private sea-view terrace. Some options are on the first floor, while others feature mezzanines, so travelers with limited mobility should check their room layout before booking.
Amenities
Relax beside the small outdoor pool among manicured lawns, olive trees, bougainvillea, and fragrant rosemary and lemon trees, or unwind with outdoor yoga classes and a pre-booked massage. Breakfast is served a la carte on Casina Li Foggi's panoramic first-floor terrace, while the guests-only restaurant opens for dinner, highlighting traditional southern Puglian dishes such as fresh pasta and locally sourced meats. Complimentary bicycles make exploring the nearby coastline easy, and standup paddleboard rentals, pasta-making workshops, and personalized wine and olive oil tastings provide additional ways to experience Salento. Free parking, airport transfers on request, and a self-service coffee machine in the restaurant during the day add convenience, though WiFi connectivity can be inconsistent.
Family-Friendliness
Though the masseria is best suited for couples and adults, families are welcome and will appreciate the large rooms and dedicated children's play area. Junior Suites can accommodate up to four guests with a double and single bed, plus a sofa bed, while the two-bedroom Family Suites provide separate sleeping areas, kitchenettes, and dining areas for greater flexibility. The ground-floor Family Suite Standard with twin beds is particularly convenient for families with younger children, while the Superior sleeps up to five guests and has two bathrooms and a private patio. Baby cots are available for a small nightly fee.
