Overview

Escape from the sensory overload of central Naples at this 17th-century palace-turned-boutique hotel, tucked behind a hidden courtyard in the heart of the Centro Storico. The carefully renovated interiors combine minimalist decor with original Renaissance details like cotto floors, painted doors, and intricate frescoes, and the 10 rooms and suites offer plenty of space for families and groups, with large units that sleep up to six. Guests can step outside the front gates to follow the pedestrian artery of Spaccanapoli, stroll to landmarks like the Duomo in minutes, or climb to the scenic roof terrace for aperitivi-hour views.

Pros
  • You'll stay in part of a 17th-century palace, with interiors that blend minimalist decor with Renaissance details like beamed ceilings, painted doors, cotto floors, and restored frescoes.
  • The location is perfect for exploring the Centro Storico on foot, with landmarks like the Sansevero Chapel Museum and the Duomo within easy strolling distance.
  • Choose between cozy, upper-story rooms or spacious, mezzanine-style suites that sleep up to six.
  • The rooftop terrace is a real perk—order a drink from the friendly staff to enjoy your aperitivi hour with sunset views over the city.
  • The optional breakfast buffet includes cakes and pastries from Pasticceria Capparelli, a beloved neighborhood bakery.
Cons
  • This isn't a good fit for travelers with limited mobility—cars and taxis can't drop off in front of the hotel, so you'll need to carry your luggage from the neighboring piazza, navigate a busy cobbled street, and take a tiny elevator to reach the hotel lobby.
  • The graffiti-covered outer entrance gates close in the evening, so keep an eye out for the small sign and be prepared to ring the buzzer for entrance if you're arriving late.
  • Suites facing the busy Spaccanapoli can experience some street noise; book an upper-floor room or a courtyard-facing suite for the quietest stay.

Authenticity

This 17th-century palazzo feels like an oasis amid the chaos of downtown Naples—but first, you have to find it. Graffiti-covered gates lead into a hidden courtyard and on to a tiny, retro elevator that takes you to the third floor of the former Palazzo Tufarelli, now home to a small boutique hotel. While there's plenty of history here, don't expect fussy interiors: the 21st-century renovation is a study in simplicity, with sleek designer furniture and stark white walls that provide a blank canvas for carefully preserved Renaissance details like restored frescoes, cotto tile floors, beamed ceilings, and intricately painted doors.

Location

Central is an understatement. You'll stay just off the famous Spaccanapoli, a narrow pedestrian artery that bisects the city's atmospheric Centro Storico. It's a minute's walk from the lively Piazza San Domenico, and though the area can get crowded, it's quintessential Naples, with colorful street art adorning crumbling buildings and plenty of small shops and restaurants spilling onto the streets. Everything is walkable: the Sansevero Chapel Museum (home to Sanmartino's Veiled Christ) is just 3 minutes away, and the Duomo, the National Archaeological Museum, and the port are all within a 10-minute radius. Cars and taxis can't pull up to the hotel, so be prepared for a short walk with your bags from the neighboring piazza.

Rooms & Bathrooms

There are just 10 air-conditioned units here: seven suites on the palazzo's piano nobile (third floor), and three newer, simpler rooms on the fourth floor. Suites feel positively palatial for a city-center hotel, with soaring ceilings, minimalist decor, and restored Renaissance touches like painted doors and cotto floors. Some add small balconies, and most include mezzanine sleeping areas with extra beds, allowing some units to sleep up to six. The smaller, upper-story rooms are a little more contemporary (though no less comfortable). Bathrooms are modern and tiled, with rain-style showers and Italian Biancamore toiletries.

Amenities

Indoor common spaces are limited to a small reception area and a breakfast room, where an optional buffet is served in the mornings. Expect a selection of Italian and continental classics, including pastries from the nearby Neapolitan institution, Pasticceria Capparelli, as well as vegan and gluten-free options. Coffee, tea, and lemon water are also available here throughout the day. When aperitivi hour rolls around, head upstairs to the top-floor terrace, where drinks are served accompanied by panoramic views over the city rooftops.

Family-Friendliness

Children are welcome at Santa Chiara. Family suites can accommodate 4-6 with extra twin beds, but the mezzanine level sleeping arrangements (with open balconies and staircases) won't be ideal for younger kids. Families with toddlers should opt for the one-level Elite suite, with a king and sofa bed. All floors are reached by elevator, but it's very small and may not accommodate larger strollers.

This was a beautiful hotel. We loved the architecture. It was very difficult to find though because the street is closed down, so we had to walk with our luggage down a very small street to find it. There needs to be a bigger sign or something because it took us about 30 minutes to find it. But the room was really nice and the hotel inside is beautiful. Also the staff was really nice. It is in a great spot in Naples. Right in the middle of all the action. Read more
