Clifftop, rural escape with stellar sea views, staff, and farm-to-table restaurant, outdoor pool, fire pit, and gardens

Overview

Built into Madeira's terraced hillsides, Socalco Nature Calheta is a quiet, nature-focused retreat with exceptional Atlantic Ocean views and a strong connection to the island's agricultural traditions. You'll stay above Calheta's sandy beach on a steep, rural solcalco about an hour from the airport, with levada waterways, gardens, and walking paths trailing throughout the property. Rooms and standalone casas are tastefully simple, mixing Scandi-inspired furnishings, volcanic stone details, private patios, and large windows oriented toward the sea. Guests can enjoy seasonal Madeiran cuisine at the restaurant, relax beside the ocean-view pool with a drink from the honesty bar, join cooking classes and garden tours, or unwind with an outdoor massage surrounded by fruit trees, herbs, and flowing watercourses.

Pros
  • Spectacular ocean views are everywhere; expect sea panoramas from guest rooms and villas, the pool, and the breakfast dining terrace.
  • Minimalist rooms bring the outdoors in with their large windows and ocean-facing seating.
  • The grounds are beautifully integrated into the hillside, with fruit trees, herbs, gardens, waterfalls, and volcanic rock details up for exploration.
  • Breakfast consistently earns high marks, particularly for the homemade breads and the use of fresh, local ingredients, while acclaimed RAZÃO Restaurant is a genuine highlight, especially for travelers interested in seasonal Madeiran cuisine and farm-to-table dining.
  • Private parking is available.
  • Self-catering rooms are great for longer stays.
  • The hotel is deeply connected to Madeira's rural culture, with terraced gardens, levada waterways, wine traditions, and hands-on activities like bread- or jam-making and cooking classes.
Cons
  • Socalco, unfortunately, isn't suited to those with limited mobility. The steep terrain and cobblestone/dirt paths between rooms aren't ideal (and can also be tricky to navigate if you have a lot of luggage).
  • The location isn't for the faint of heart: access roads are narrow and winding.

Authenticity

Created by Madeiran chef Octávio Freitas, Socalco Nature Calheta is built into Calheta's terraced socalcos (traditional farming terraces found throughout the island), with restored agricultural spaces, limestone paths, levada-inspired waterways, and a 150-year-old winepress set in a volcanic-rock cellar. Several houses preserve or reinterpret their former uses, like Casa da Palha, once a straw warehouse, and Casa do Caseiro, formerly used for farm tools, while rooms keep the focus on sea views and the surrounding coastal landscape. Chef Freitas' award-winning culinary vision also shapes the experience via seasonal menus highlighting regional ingredients (some hotel-grown), local farmers, and traditional recipes.

Location

Perched on a steep hillside amphitheatrically above the seaside town of Calheta, Socalco offers sweeping ocean views from nearly every corner of the property. Though the setting feels wonderfully secluded and immersed in nature, Calheta's sandy beach is only about a 10-minute downhill walk (best to hail a taxi for the uphill return), while restaurants and a supermarket are a bit farther away. Hikers can pick up a trail, many leading along levadas to forests and the escarpment. Madeira Airport is roughly an hour's drive, and having your own vehicle is highly recommended due to the island's narrow, winding roads and the property's elevated position.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Accommodations range from minimalistic standard rooms to standalone houses with kitchenettes built directly into the hillside, each designed to showcase the surrounding terrain and ocean. Interiors pair clean Scandinavian-inspired furnishings, soft natural tones (warm wood and polished concrete), and large windows that frame sea views. Several units have private patios or gardens accompanied by the soothing sound of nearby watercourses, while standout stays like Casa da Gruta and waterfall-adjacent Casa da Cascata include cave-like volcanic rock interiors. Amenities include coffee machines, kettles, and robes, though bathrooms are fairly simple and stocked with limited toiletries (primarily a 3-in-1 shower product).

Amenities

Socalco centers heavily around food, nature, and relaxation. Start the day with a generous homemade breakfast served on a scenic terrace overlooking the Atlantic, often featuring fresh bread, local produce, and ingredients harvested directly from the gardens. RAZÃO Restaurant is a major highlight, serving seasonal Madeiran cuisine with an ever-changing menu shaped by the day's harvests and fresh coastal catches, while the relaxed Honesty Bar encourages you to pour your own drinks and settle up later. Additional amenities include a freshwater sea-view pool and solarium, outdoor massage treatments, barbecue facilities, cooking workshops, garden tours, wine experiences, and wellness sessions with a personal trainer in the open-air common spaces.

Family-Friendliness

Socalco Nature Calheta is best suited to couples and older travelers. Families with independent kids may enjoy the outdoor gardens, agricultural activities, and opportunities to participate in cooking classes or organic farm visits. However, rooms accommodate only two guests; never mind the property's steep terrain, cobblestone and dirt pathways, and multiple stairways that make it challenging for strollers or very young children.

Wildlife

The terraced gardens, orchards, aromatic herbs, flowing levadas, and surrounding vegetation attract native birds and insects, and birdsong is a constant backdrop throughout the property. Guests walking the grounds may spot endemic butterflies and small lizards common to Madeira's warmer coast.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a part of Socalco's philosophy, from its BREEAM-certified architecture to its permaculture-based farming practices. The hotel uses solar energy, collects rainwater and levada water for reuse, composts kitchen waste, minimizes solid waste, and prioritizes biodegradable products and reusable packaging throughout its operations. Much of the produce served in RAZÃO comes directly from the hotel's organic gardens and orchards, while local suppliers, artisans, and regional recipes are actively supported and preserved. Additional eco-conscious measures—such as optional towel and linen changes, thermal insulation to reduce heating and cooling needs, recycling initiatives, and environmental education for guests and staff—reflect the Socalco's broader commitment to responsible tourism.
