Villa del Gattopardo Suites & Spa, Palermo
Historic 18th-century villa and former princely residence, with Baroque-styled suites, Mediterranean gardens, a spa, pool, and restaurant
Overview
Kimkim's Take
- The setting trades the bustle of central Palermo for the quieter, more residential area—a good fit for travelers who want space and greenery (rather than a doorstep location in the historic core).
- This is the real deal for history buffs: the early 18th-century villa was the summer residence of the Princes of Lampedusa and has close ties to the last heir of the aristocratic family and author of Il Gattopardo (a recent screen adaptation is available on Netflix).
- The Mediterranean grounds are a highlight, filled with fragrant citrus gardens and centuries-old olive groves, plus a dedicated Scents Garden of aromatic spices.
- There's plenty here for a lazy afternoon, where you can swim in the infinity-style pool, order a cocktail at the outdoor lounge bar, or book some downtime at Le Acque del Principe spa. Turkish baths, a jetted pool, sensory showers, and massage are a few offerings available.
- The illuminated Dancing Fountain puts on a music-and-water display after dark—an admittedly theatrical but memorable perk reserved for hotel guests.
- You're outside Palermo's historic center, so this isn't the best choice if your priority is to step out and immediately explore the city's major sights, restaurants, and street life on foot.
- Beds run on the smaller size and are a little tight if you're taller than 5'9 (175 cm).
Authenticity
Few Palermo stays come with a literary pedigree quite like Villa del Gattopardo, an early 18th-century summer residence once belonging to the Prince of Lampedusa. Giuseppe Tomasi, the last heir of the noble princely house of Tomasi di Lampedusa and author of Il Gattopardo, spent time here, while the villa and his family history helped inspire the novel. A careful restoration preserved much of the aristocratic character, including trompe l'oeil frescoed ceilings painted by Roman artist Gaspare Fumagalli, ornate stucco, coffered ceilings, 18th-century Sicilian marble, terracotta, and original stone-tiled floors, a neoclassical chapel, and lavish Louis XVI-style furnishings throughout rooms, suites, and grand reception halls.
Location
Villa del Gattopardo sits amid extensive gardens in Palermo's northern outskirts, in the historic Conca d'Oro—the fertile plain once famed for the citrus groves that surrounded the Sicilian capital. The setting trades the bustle of central Palermo and its attractions for the quieter, more residential area. You'll need a car or rely on the hotel's paid transfer service to reach both the seaside neighborhood of Mondello and its sandy beach (a 15-minute drive), as well as Palermo's historic center (about a 30-minute car ride). Airport transfers can also be arranged for an additional fee.
Rooms & Bathrooms
Just 12 individually styled rooms and suites are spread across the restored villa and its grounds, incorporating period furniture and Baroque-inspired details. Options range from the smaller Aranceto room with a small garden-facing terrace to expansive suites with separate sitting rooms, private outdoor areas, olive-grove or fountain views, and, in the Salina Suite, an in-room hot tub. Marble bathrooms generally feature roomy walk-in showers, while original details such as wooden beams, vaulted ceilings, traditional tilework, and gilded mirrors lend each room its own personality. For the grandest historic setting, choose Gattopardo or Principe on the villa's main floor, though both require climbing an internal staircase.
Amenities
Le Acque del Principe spa offers a Turkish bath, jetted pool, aromatherapy, and a menu of massage and body treatments. Outdoors, you can move between sprawling Mediterranean gardens and historic gazebos, an infinity-style swimming pool with an integrated hot tub, and a poolside lounge bar serving cocktails infused with botanicals picked on the grounds. Breakfast leans local, with homemade jams, organic produce, pastries, Sicilian cheeses, and cold cuts, while International and Sicilian fare is served in the 18th-century dining room for dinner. Come dusk, the villa's Dancing Fountain adds a unique flourish, choreographing illuminated water jets to waltzes and other classical music.
Family-Friendliness
Families have a dedicated option in the very spacious Bridal Family Suite, the largest accommodation on the property, which sleeps up to four with a double bedroom, large living area, and a second room where two single beds can be set up. The extensive gardens are great for kids to explore, and the outdoor pool is another plus during warmer months. That said, the villa's refined aesthetic, spa, historic interiors, and romantic grounds make it feel particularly geared toward couples and adult travelers.
