Alfonso Nuñez

Since long time ago I have been travelling around the world discovering the different ways humans have organized their lifes. I was able to finish my communication studies in St. Louis, Missouri, and therefore had the chance to learn a different way of thinking from the european one: The "Why not?" mentality instead of the "Are you sure you want to do that?"

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"All over Spain; Northern Territory around the Basque Country, Pyrenees, and The diferent Ways of Saint James. The unknow Extremadura and Castile heritages. The light of the mediterranean coast, and the green mountains ranges in Asturias.
We design active trips for travellers, not tourists. Taylor-made programs close to our mother land and local traditions."

How did you get involved in travel?

"Going to America, Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania. Sometimes walking, sometimes cycling, sometimes with local transports, sometimes alone, sometimes with company. Always with my senses open. After being so connected with going abroad, I decided to show others in my homeland, the same things I was looking for when going outside; emotions. "

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"20 years ago discovering Cuba cycling from Santiago to Habana during one month using their local currency (not very legal at that time) and sharing experiences with locals. On new years eve we arrived to a very poor village by the north coast, and were invited to three different dinners on the same night. There was no way to say "no" to any of them, so we made our best eating and sharing like on a Groundhog Day."

Two groups are now using them for their next holidays in other parts of the world. We really enjoyed the private guides and having drivers at each stop along the way to greet us and get us straight to our accommodation and the flow of information and constant communication from Alfonso was brilliant! We couldn't fault anything!

We also went to Parc Guél and did a tapas tour the last night in the Gothic Quarter. Our guide for the bike tour and tapas tour was George and he was very funny and knowledgeable about the history and architecture of Barcelona. In Cadaqués we did a 10 mile hike along the coast with Alfonso as our guide. It was a besutiful hike and the weather was perfect for it. Most of the shops in town are closed during this time but it was nice to have less crowds and just be able to explore the beautiful streets and relax. In Menorca we went on a horseback ride along the coast and had time to explore Ciutadella and Mahon. If I were doing it over I would save the island for a separate or longer trip because I would have liked more time in Barcelona. We wanted to see as much as we could though so we added it in. Overall kimkim was very easy to work with, very responsive and helped us set up and incredible trip for our family of four. We are already talking about where we might like to go next in Spain and would definitely use them again.

I enjoyed Sagrada Família the most because it is such an incredible sight. I recommend the guided tour because you learn so much more about why he designed things the way he did. You receive headphones so you can hear the guide without her having to shout. Parc Guél was crowded so I can’t even imagine how it is in the summer.

Beautiful views, great exercise. There is some steep uphill but it is not too long and definitely worth it. We enjoy hiking and it was a great way to get outside and see some amazing scenery. November is a perfect time for this because we could wear shorts yet were not too hot.

We were originally thinking we would be going to more than one restaurant to try out tapas but this tour is a walk around El Born and you dine at one Tapas restaurant. Our restaurant was right by the Picasso Museum. I cannot remember the name of it but was very good. Our guide George was wonderful.

I enjoyed this a lot because we were able to see many different neighborhoods and make it down along the water as well. It was an easy bike ride and our guide was great. It might not be as enjoyable in summer with hot temps and big crowds but November was perfect for it.

The hotel rooms are comfortable, the places they took us are fun, and most of all the fresh and top notch foods we tasted were just heavenly! Highly recommended for all who wants to experience Basque Country.

I worked with Alfonso from Basque Lands Way Company to curate a custom 3 day experience for a group traveling in Basque country. We had a limited amount of time and wanted to visit Bilbao, La Rioja and San Sebastian with activities throughout and Alfonso made it happen. He was great to chat with online and he captured everything I wanted in the itinerary he created for our group. Ivan (a.k.a. the most interesting man in Spain) was our group's tour guide during the three days. He picked us up from the airport in Bilbao and from their the fun began! Over the course of three days Ivan brought us on city tours, pintxos experiences, wineries, mountain bike riding, and hiking. With having a local guide, we avoided any tourist traps and 90% of the time we were the only tourists around. It was an ideal way to experience a new country, truly getting to experience the local culture. Ivan was full of knowledge and had a great chill energy that is ideal for managing groups of people. I cannot express how much of a luxury it was to have someone familiar with the local culture and language handling all the ins-and-outs of your trip experience for you. From ordering food, drinks, dealing with bike rentals, having water bottles and snacks for the hike, whatever it was, Ivan thought of it and was always prepared every step of the way. It allowed myself and the rest of my group to not have to think at all and just relax and enjoy experience. Ivan is a super fun and nice guy who's company was a highlight of the trip. I hope to visit Basque country again and would not hesitate to book with Basque Lands Way.
