5 Days in France - 5 Unique Itinerary Ideas

To make the most of a five-day trip to France, it's best to focus on a single region. While you may be tempted to cover more ground, sticking to one geographical area saves time, and you'll be pleasantly surprised by how diverse the sights and activities can be even within a close radius. For example, Bordeaux is known for its exemplary wines, but beaches and bike tours also await. And a road trip through Provence can span villages, vineyards, and the old-meets-new bustle of cosmopolitan Marseille.

One week in France is enough time to explore Paris, plus the highlights of one other region. Wine aficionados can spend a few days in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley, history buffs should consider Normandy, and travelers with leisure in mind will enjoy Nice and the glitzy South of France. If you've already done Paris, you can skip it altogether in lieu of more regional delights—head straight to Marseilles, for example, and spend your whole trip immersed in the culture and food of Provence.

With 10 days in France, you can journey through the country's iconic cities, dazzling coastlines, and serene countrysides on a highlights tour or spend time in Normandy and the Loire Valley to soak up the country's cuisine and art. Travelers who prefer mountain landscapes will find Lyon, Annecy, and Chamonix to be perfect bases, while active explorers can tick off thrilling activities during a self-drive trip, and laid-back travelers hop between wineries in Bordeaux.

You can cover some serious ground with two weeks in France, spending multiple days in up to three different regions (plus time in Paris). For example, pair the South of France and the Provençal countryside with a few days of hiking in the French Alps. Or stick within a smaller radius, perhaps with a western road trip through Normandy and Bourdeaux. From canoeing the Dordogne River to shucking oysters on the wild islands of Brittany's coast—your options are plentiful.

How Many Days to Spend in France

For a solid France itinerary that covers two regions plus Paris, a 10-day trip is a great choice. With less time, a well-rounded trip is still within reach, especially if you're willing to forego time in Paris to see more of the country. And, of course, the lucky travelers with two weeks or more will have no shortage of things to see and do. Check out some possible itineraries from 5 to 14 days below.

Best Time of Year to Visit France

France offers year-round appeal, whether you're craving sun and sea, powdery snow, or a peaceful, crowd-free escape. The winter months (December to February) are ideal for a ski holiday and cultural exploration, while the summer (June to August) is the busiest and priciest time of year due in part to the great weather. However, the best time to visit France is in the spring (April to May) or fall (September to November), when the weather is warm, and the crowds are manageable.

We spent wonderful nine days in France, traveling from Paris to Tours to Bayeux and back to Paris. On arrival in Paris, we took the high-speed TGV from Paris to Tours where we rented a car for our travels over the next few days. We drove to our hotel in the countryside from the city of Tours and spent time biking and touring Châteaux in the region.
We then drove to the city of Bayeux in Normandy where we toured the Allied landing sites from WWII as well as the American cemetery. We had an excellent guide that took us through the history and sacrifice of the Allied troops on June 6, 1944, as they begin the task of freeing Europe from Nazi occupation. Our hotel in Bayeux was in the town center within close walking distance of many nice restaurants.
Next, we traveled back to Paris where we spent four nights and toured many popular sites including a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower, and guided tours of the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral and the Sainte-Chapelle Royal Chapel. Notre-Dame has been beautifully restored after the fire of 2019, and our guide gave us an engaging history of the Cathedral and its architecture. Sainte-Chapelle has the most beautiful stain glass windows one could hope to see.
We toured portions of the Musée du Louvre with an excellent guide where we focused on the Ancient Greece, Roman, and French Renaissance exhibits. Our guide brought history to life with detailed explanations of what was happening in society during these periods. Afterwards, we enjoyed a wine and cheese pairing at a lovely wine shop.
A final highlight of the trip was a private cooking class with French Chef Myriam where we learned to prepare a three course French meal. After the preparation, we enjoyed the meal with a nice bottle of French red wine (Une belle bouteille de vin rouge français).
Kimkim guided us through setting up the customized itinerary to focus on our specific interests, covering a region of France we had been wanting to explore. All our guides were outstanding. When we had an issue (which was rare), KimKim was very responsive to be sure everything was right. They even surprised us with a bottle of champagne on our first night for my wife’s birthday.

David and Sherril-
Thank you so much for sharing this beautifully detailed reflection on your nine‑day journey through France. It truly sounds like an extraordinary experience from start to finish, and I’m delighted to hear how meaningful each region was for you both.
I’m especially glad that the Loire Valley and Normandy portions resonated so deeply. Touring the D‑Day landing sites with an expert guide is always powerful, and your description of the history and sacrifice there captures exactly why that region leaves such a lasting impression. It’s wonderful to hear that your hotel in Bayeux and the walkability of the town center added to the experience.
Your time back in Paris sounds equally special — from the newly restored Notre‑Dame and the breathtaking stained glass of Sainte‑Chapelle to your focused Louvre visit that brought ancient civilizations and the Renaissance to life. I love that you ended that day with a wine and cheese pairing; it’s such a perfect Parisian touch.
And what a highlight to finish with a private cooking class with Chef Myriam. Preparing a three‑course French meal and enjoying it together with a beautiful bottle of red wine is such a memorable way to connect with French culture.
Thank you as well for your kind words about the planning process. I’m thrilled that the customized itinerary aligned with your interests and that each guide elevated the experience. I’m also happy our team could support you quickly when needed — and I’m so glad the birthday champagne surprise added a little extra joy to your first evening.
It was a true pleasure helping you explore this region of France, and I would love to assist with your next adventure whenever the time feels right.
Warmly,
Liz
