Expect fewer crowds at Eilean Donan Castle in early fall
Scotland in September: Travel Tips, Weather & More

With early hints of autumn, September is considered one of the best months of the year to travel to Scotland. This is a great time to explore Edinburgh's top sights and take a scenic road trip with fewer crowds than in August, though you can always find a festive vibe at the Pitlochry Highland Games with members of the British royal family.

Best Time of Year to Visit Scotland

True, most colloquial Scottish terms for the climate refer to fickle—and mostly "dreich" (dreary)—weather, despite which the sun shines more than you may imagine: Palm trees even grow on the west coast, sustained by warm Gulf Stream waters and air. Scotland frequently defies its stereotypes and can be sublime in any season, each uniquely showcasing the country's rugged beauty. So don't let the Scots' talk about the weather put you off.

How Many Days to Spend in Scotland

From ancient castles to whisky distilleries and Highland Games (not to mention a mythical monster in Loch Ness), there's a reason bonnie Scotland is awash with "Outlander" fans. At roughly the same size as South Carolina, Scotland is small enough to explore the highlights in one week. However, you'll need at least two weeks to explore the mainland and one or even two extra weeks to take in the major islands.

WOW!!!! We just got back from an amazing family trip through Scotland and Ireland booked through KimKim with RouteScape and we’re still talking about it every day.
From the very start, everything was so easy. The KimKim app had all our hotels, plans and details in one place, which made traveling stress-free. But what really stood out was how well everything was put together. The hotel choices were all great, we were given options and went with their recommendations and every single one was excellent.
And honestly, the drivers were one of the biggest surprises in the best way. Garry in Scotland and Barry in Ireland were absolutely fantastic. The vehicle was a top notch high end Mercedes that had large windows for everyone to be able to see, clean as a whistle everyday and restocked with bottled water for everyone. It was obvious they don’t just pick anyone, these guys were friendly, knowledgeable and made the whole experience so much better. We learnt some Scottish words ask well as some good Irish words. They felt like part of the trip, not just drivers but family!!
Some of the biggest highlights for us:
🇬🇧 Scotland
Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile, and The Real Mary King’s Close Tour
Glencoe Valley — absolutely breathtaking
Isle of Skye — Fairy Pools, Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock (wow, just wow)
We really wish we had more time in Edinburgh. Our hotel, Wilde Apartments right beside the castle, was perfect, we could walk everywhere.
🇮🇪 Ireland
Cliffs of Moher — unbelievable views
Ring of Kerry — honestly some of the most beautiful scenery we’ve ever seen
Killarney National Park — especially Muckross House, Gardens & Waterfall (a must-see)
Blarney Castle — kissing the stone was way more fun than we expected
Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough, Galway, Adare Village, and Kilkenny — all amazing stops
Inch Beach was another huge highlight — the scenery was just breathtaking. One of those places where you just stop and take it all in.
We also did the Guinness Storehouse Connoisseur Experience in Dublin — so well done and 100% worth it.
Temple Bar was another fun surprise. We actually went twice. People online say skip it or it’s too expensive, but we didn’t feel that way at all. The live music, energy and atmosphere made it so fun, definitely something you should try at least once.
What really stood out the most was the people. Everywhere we went in Scotland and Ireland, everyone was so friendly, welcoming and happy. It really made the trip even more special.
A big thank you to KimKim for making everything run so smoothly. From planning to drivers to hotels, everything just worked and that made such a difference.

Hotel Reviews
Davenport Hotel
Dublin

We absolutely loved our stay at The Davenport Hotel. From the moment we arrived, the staff at the front were amazing, welcoming, friendly, and genuinely made us feel taken care of. The dining area is huge and really impressive and everything felt well organized and relaxed. A lovely touch was the little snacks available, like gummy candies and chocolates, small details, but they made it feel extra welcoming. The location is also perfect, right in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Dublin. We were so close to everything, which made it really easy to explore the city on foot. Overall, this was one of our favourite hotels from the trip, comfortable, well located and full of thoughtful touches. We’d happily stay again.

Authenticity & Character
The hotel was very welcoming and inviting when we first arrived very open concept
Location
You could explore the city by foot from this hotel it was amazing
Staff
From checking to check out, staff was unbelievable and very helpful
Cleanliness & Comfort
The rooms were bright & clean and the bedding was so comfortable.
The Victoria Hotel
Killarney

A small, older boutique-style hotel that feels very classic and elegant, almost like the kind of place the Queen herself might stay. It has a lot of charm and character and overall gives a very classy impression. One thing to note is that it is a bit of a walk from the main downtown area where all the hustle and bustle is, so it’s slightly removed from the centre if that’s what you’re looking for. Unfortunately, our daughter’s room had a strong smoke smell when we arrived. We didn’t end up mentioning it at the time since we got in late and just settled in, but it did take away a bit from the experience. What really stood out, though, was the front desk lady, Maura. She was genuinely the sweetest, kindest person and went out of her way to be helpful, she really made a difference to our stay.

Authenticity & Character
It is fit for a queen, from classy china to the high end silverware
Location
Quite far from restaurant and the downtown area
Staff
Amazing and go over and above to help you with anything.
Cleanliness & Comfort
It’s very nice but need to update more lighting in the room to get ready as well as our daughter’s room across from us smelt so bad of smoke
The Galmont Hotel & Spa
Galway

We really enjoyed our stay at the Galmont Hotel & Spa especially using the pool, hot tub & sauna after a long day. The location was honestly perfect, we could walk everywhere we wanted in Galway, which made everything so easy and stress-free. It was about a 3–5 minute walk to Eyre Square and very close to buses. The hotel felt comfortable and welcoming right away. Our room was clean, quiet and a nice place to come back to after a busy day out. What really stood out for us was the food and how large the dining area and food area was. We had breakfast at the hotel and it was very classy without feeling stuffy, just really well done, beautifully presented and enjoyable.

Authenticity & Character
The spa and pool area
Location
3-5 min walk to Eyre Square
Staff
Very kind and helpful
Cleanliness & Comfort
Super open concept and very trendy
Dakota Glasgow
Glasgow

Enjoyable stay at a Glasgow hotel. The location was convenient for getting around the city and the rooms were clean, comfortable and well looked after. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our visit. Just a few blocks, we ended up catching the hop on hop off, which we had a lot of fun with. We also ate dinner and had breakfast at the hotel, and both were very, very classy, beautifully presented, great quality and really added to the overall experience.

Authenticity & Character
Very classy posh hotel
Location
Walking distance to everything cause you are right downtown.
Staff
Very kind & helpful when we ask for directions
Cleanliness & Comfort
Very clean & great bedding
Marmalade Hotel
Portree

We had a fantastic stay at The Marmalade Hotel. From the moment we arrived, everything felt thoughtfully designed and high quality, with stylish interiors, comfortable rooms and little touches that made it feel special rather than just a standard hotel. The breakfast was excellent and really set us up for the day, with the overall service was warm, helpful and welcoming throughout our stay. You can tell a lot of care has gone into the details here. The only thing to be aware of is the location is a bit of a walk uphill from the main town area, but honestly, it ends up being a good little workout and doesn’t take away from the experience at all.

Authenticity & Character
A very warm friendly feel
Location
Just a little steep walk from town
Staff
So helpful and very personable. Met a young fellow that’s from Alberta that works there and so kind.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Rooms were clean and beds comfortable
Wilde Apartments Grassmarket
Edinburgh

Wilde Apartments in Edinburgh was one of my favourite stays of the entire trip. It’s a trendy, modern aparthotel just a block away from everything and right across from the castle, the location couldn’t be better. You’re steps from all the main sights, which made exploring so easy. The rooms are super modern and really well designed, with everything you need for a comfortable stay, coffee, toaster and kitchen basics that make it feel easy when you’re traveling. The buffet breakfast included was also really good, one of the best we had on the trip. It has that cool, simple, stylish feel to it without trying too hard. I would 100% stay there again.

Authenticity & Character
Super trendy & so clean
Location
A few steps away from everything
Staff
Unbelievable staff they go that extra mile with you until you got your question answered
Cleanliness & Comfort
What more can I say but 10/10

Booking my mom’s 70th birthday trip to Scotland through Kimkim was one of the best travel decisions I’ve ever made. Stephen planned a truly beautiful journey from the moment we landed in Edinburgh until our plane took off nine days later. Every detail was thoughtfully arranged, allowing us to experience both the iconic highlights of Scotland and deeply personal moments tied to our family history.

Of course, even the best travel plans can encounter unexpected changes. When our itinerary was suddenly disrupted, Stephen and his team stepped in immediately and seamlessly organized a last-minute hotel stay in London along with train transportation to Edinburgh. What could have been a stressful situation turned into just another memorable part of the adventure thanks to their calm professionalism and quick problem-solving.

Throughout the trip we were able to visit our ancestral home and explore so many unforgettable places: Scone Palace, Blair Atholl Castle, the breathtaking Isle of Skye, and a captivating boat tour in Oban where dolphins followed alongside our boat. Every stop felt meaningful, magical, and perfectly paced.

This trip gave my mother memories she will cherish for the rest of her life, and I am incredibly grateful to Stephen and the Kimkim team for making her milestone birthday so special. I cannot recommend them highly enough for anyone planning a personalized and unforgettable journey through Scotland.

Market Street Hotel

From the staff checking us to the staff serving breakfast, I could not have met a more caring group of people. This hotel was centralized and exceeded our expectations! We needed this stay after the long travel it took us to get here. They were very hospitable and helpful with any question. The beds were delightful, and if I didn’t want to see more of the country, I would’ve stayed longer. Thank you!
