We are pretty last minute with our planning and we weren't even sure there was time to pull a decent vacation in Peru together but Io, our kimkim specialist, was fantastic! She put together a great itinerary for our family of five, including plenty of history and cultural experiences, local sightseeing, as well as adventure. We had enough free time which was important as some of the family needed time adapting to the altitude in Cusco. We didn't have a list of must-sees and we simply trusted her recommendations and we are glad we did. Our day in Pisac and Ollantaytambo was unexpected and fascinating and one of the best! Adriel, our guide, was incredibly knowledgable and passionate about it all and we all swore we lucked out with the best guide! Of course Machu Picchu was a wonder to see and we were grateful for the guide, Rosa, who met us as soon as we disembarked the train and rushed us to the bus to head up to it. We would have never been able to figure that out and get there on time without her swift and urgent guidance! Another highlight was the Via Ferrate Climbing and Ziplining in the Sacred Valley. Our family has ziplined in some pretty amazing countries but the climbing up portion of this experience was new and exhilarating! We agreed this was the best day and our two guides, Brian and (forget his name) as well as Karla who took our photos, were outstanding! Additionally, all the hotels were even better than expected, with online photos not doing them justice. They were all in great locations, easy to explore on our own and walk to markets, coffee shops, restaurants, etc but also clean and comfortable. Have to give a huge shout out to Sonesta Posadas del Inca Yucay, our hotel in the Sacred Valley. This place was so stunning. There aren't words for how enamored we were with this place. Photos don't begin to show the beauty of this place. My husband wanted to cancel the rest of the trip and stay here! But honestly, it was sort of an oasis in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere but it had everything we needed and was just very unique. We also took a cooking class the last day and honestly, while we all like to cook, no one was sure what to expect. I can't locate the name of the place but it was a 3-hour full immersion cooking class in the heart of Cusco and Chef Fernando taught us so much about local cuisine and ingredients, provided samples of several things as well as walking us through making a couple of delicious and beautiful dishes. He was an entertaining and fun and there was so much food! The people in Peru were lovely, the food was all pretty great, the hotels were better than expected and there was the perfect mix of planned and free time for our family. Lisbeth, at Andean Travel, who was our local contact, was responsive and helpful when the altitude affected our plans one morning and all the guides and drivers we had in every city were great. kimkim delivered for us once again!

Sonesta Posadas del Inca Yucay
Urubamba

I cannot describe how much we loved this place! The photos don't do it justice. Amazing design, big beautiful rooms, gorgeous greenery, restaurants and coffee shop on premise, we took so many pictures here. This is no standard hotel experience, it was something different. I can see why they have weddings here. Gorgeous!

Authenticity & Character
Private balcony off each of our rooms, huge wooden doors with iron finishings, rustic but yet really nice. Hard to describe but best hotel!
Location
We were only there less than 48 hours and it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere driving into it but it had everything we needed so didn't matter where it was.
Staff
It was cool when we were there at night and rooms have portable heaters. I called because ours wasn't working and it was replaced within 2 minutes. I'm not even sure how they got to our room so quickly.

Location was great! The plaza was up the road a few blocks and it was very walkable to all things we wanted to do and see there. The rooms were clean and comfortable. They had the tea in the lobby and O2 for those struggling with the altitude. I will say it was pretty cold in the lobby, hallways and rooms. Rooms did have portable heaters though so we were warm enough when sleeping. Staff was very nice but as we don't speak great Spanish, communication was sometimes a little tricky for us. There was a great breakfast spread but we preferred the coffee from the little cafe next door. Overall, it was a great place. We stayed there three nights, two night then left for two days and then came back there for our last night.

Authenticity & Character
I love anything that is clean and comfortable and safe but feels like we are somewhere different and this ticked all those boxes.

Five star clean, four star comfort. It was just chilly inside. We were there in August. Bring warm pajamas and a jacket or sweater for the halls/lobby.

We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history and the culture of the Andean people, found the cuisine delicious, and the mountains simultaneously breathtaking and calming.

Hotel Review
El Albergue Ollantaytambo Boutique Hotel
Cusco

The hotel was located essentially in a train station. The views of the mountains some of which seemed close enough to touch and then the snow capped peaks in the distance were simply magnificent. We enjoyed the flora in and around the hotel, and totally appreciated their excellent attempts at protecting the environment, growing their own organic and ecologically friendly produce, as well as fostering sustainability. The food was delicious, and the staff everywhere was excellent and very accommodating. The only fly in the ointment were the fumes from the trains. It was supremely convenient to have the trains stop there, but their fumes remained in the air for a while. Nothing that the hotel can control, but the only fly in the ointment as it were. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at El Albergue, and would recommend it to family and friends despite the caveat mentioned above.

Authenticity & Character
As noted above the flora, decorations and commitment to the environment made it unique.
Location
Interesting location being in the train station. Now if only PeruRail used cleaning burning engines.

Very helpful and responsive.

Again this was very informative and enlightening. Again Juan was excellent. Learning about the strengths and weaknesses of the various groups who preceded the Incas was completely fascinating. Sacsayhuaman was another example of Incan engineering ingenuity. Those massive stones aligned at well calculated angles to lessen the overall impact of earthquakes. Absolutely fascinating. Cusco City was also interesting and we had the good fortune to witness even more of the Peruvian culture as we encountered groups of costumed school age children performing a variety of dances which illuminated the cultural heritage of Peru. San Pedro market was intriguing. While we saw some familiar items, many of the goods were unusual. We enjoyed a delicious drink made from the lucuma fruit which is only found in Peru. This was altogether an interesting and fascinating day.

Private Tour to Tipon, Piquillacta & Andahuaylas
Cusco

At Tipon, we managed to get there before the hordes, and found it amazingly quiet and calming. The fountains flowed behind us while we looked at the mountains in front of us. Again the Incas hydraulic prowess was once again on full display. The four fountains expelled water at exactly the same rate. At another point, the force of the water coming from higher elevations was mitigated by the placement of a stone at exactly the right height. Piquillacta … the visit to this Wari walled city was different from the first site. In direct contrast with the peace and calm of the first site, this site was more oppressive due to its emphasis on protection and its multiple layers of walls, some of which were quite high. Andahuaylillas was a lovely Andean Baroque church and the insertion of Arabic influence in the decoration of the ceiling was illuminating.

The Argentina portion of our trip had a couple of mishaps with booking Montevideo (instead of Colonia) which was fixed last minute ($200 extra cost), and the San Telmo grill tour was just a lunch in Palermo (but the agency made it up to us with an excellent dinner in Cuzco!).

Every single driver on our entire trip was excellent. Every time the driver was early to pick us up, had a very comfortable van, and drove well. This is huge when you are in a foreign country and the roads/traffic are insane.

We had a very unfortunate case of food poisoning and our local guide Lisbeth did an amazing job of helping us when we needed her most. Thank you Lisbeth! Thank you Io!

The “not-so-good” hotel was Conde de Lemos in Arequipa (would not recommend it to anyone!). The other issue was with planning our last two days in Arequipa - we didn’t find those days worthwhile and probably should have just gone home after Colca - it would have been helpful to get advice about the area to know that there wasn’t really anything in Arequipa that we were interested in.

Hotel Reviews
Conde de Lemos
Arequipa

Would not recommend at all. Windows don’t close so you hear street noise all the time. Bathroom was incredibly small and you had to sit sideways on the toilet. They gave us a small packet of shampoo which were very tacky. They need to install the refillable soap/shampoo containers that most hotels had. They are going through a remodel so maybe these issues will change. No elevator and confusing signs on the second floor so you couldn’t find your room.

Authenticity & Character
Nothing special at all. Maybe it was the remodel but everything seemed like a 2-star hotel.
Location
A short walk to Plaza des Armas and restaurants. Very noisy/ busy part of town. Felt safe but did not like being in the bustle/chaos of the center.
Staff
Nice enough- we were always greeted when coming and going.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Shower had mold and peeling paint. Windows were ridiculously inefficient for noise and temperature. Not sure how that room would be in summer but I suspect very hot, humid and noisy.
El Refugio Hotel Colca
Chivay

Amazing! Like a 5-star retreat! Wonderful location and exceptional staff. Everything felt like we were appreciated and welcome. They had tea and filtered water for travelers.

Authenticity & Character
The whole theme was consistent with the “out of the way retreat” atmosphere.
Location
Located off the road, out of town right on the river. Only people around were guests and staff. Very peaceful setting!
Staff
Very attentive, friendly and helpful.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The triple room was adequate. Spacious bathroom. Not a lot of amenities in the room - maybe they could add a kettle and tea option given how cold the location was.
Hacienda Plaza de Armas
Puno

Located on the Plaza des Armas which is great for getting around to restaurants and local shops but horrible for sleeping. Big bathroom but old jacuzzi tub instead of shower which raised accessibility issues for one of us. They had filtered water easily available to travelers which was welcome and appreciated. Overall the hotel was adequate with nothing to get too excited about.

Authenticity & Character
Seemed out of date, particularly the jacuzzi bath tub instead of a real shower unit.
Location
Terrible for sleeping (the Plaza is too noisy) but great for getting around the city.
Staff
Not too friendly but provided basic service.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Old fashioned looking but not in a good way.
Ferre Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu

Adequate - nothing special. Needs to have either filtered water or tea available in the lobby.

Authenticity & Character
Breakfast room was nice but otherwise the atmosphere wasn’t anything special. Seems liked an ordinary hotel.
Location
Right near train station, street market and restaurants. Unfortunately too close to the train tracks so you heard and felt trains coming.
Staff
Helpful and friendly.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Typical.
Tierra Viva Cusco San Blas
Cusco

Greatness in everything - location, staff rooms. They provided two types of tea all day and filled out water bottles from the kitchen. Room had a tea kettle which we used for the colder nights.

Authenticity & Character
It was small enough to feel valued as a guest with quaint decor.
Location
Perfectly situated in San Blas area - easy to walk to restaurants or shopping. Very safe atmosphere along the local streets.
Staff
Very helpful each time we asked for something. Complimentary cookies at check in and drinks in fridge. Excellence in just the little extras they did.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The triple was organized so that one bed had its own separate space, which was perfect instead all being together. Small bathroom but that’s hard to change.
San Agustin Paracas
Paracas

Hotel was nicely situated with great views. Dining option was great considering there weren’t a lot of places around.

Authenticity & Character
The main building seems big and impersonal. Hard to change that.
Location
On the beach and 1 minute walk to Ballestros island tours and tourist street market.
Staff
Attentive and responsive. We had to ask the bar for filtered water but they didn’t seem to mind.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Not their fault but lots of dust and sand from the winds. Hard to keep the rooms clean.
Hotel El Tambo
Lima

Adequate accommodations. Very small breakfast area- hard to find seats. Thank you for having filtered water available to travelers. Good location - 1 km to main walking street.

Authenticity & Character
Small enough to seem special.
Location
Close to the main walking street for shopping and eating. Safe neighborhood.
Staff
Cleanliness & Comfort
Triple room was adequate but nothing great. It would be nice to have had instructions for using the TV.

Arequipa

The Monastery of Santa Catalina was the only worthwhile part of the tour and because it was in the city center, you could get there without a city tour. Most of the interesting things are in the center and easy to see on foot without a guide. The town of Arequipa is chaotic and dirty. We didn’t find anything special about this part of our trip and wished we had just planned without it.

Train travel was a good option but the pre-departure chaos was stressful. They should put instructions up for the hundreds of tourists standing there not k owing what to do. Simple visuals would be so helpful - once we found out we needed to find our Inca character with our train car number, we were fine. Still too crowded in that small space.

Moray was incredible to see. The salt mines were interesting as well. We took a bus tour with about 30 people. Tour guide was bossy but very knowledgeable. She only took us to her favorite shops on the tour and limited other interactions with local sellers. The tour of the textile “ factory” was interesting to see how they use the alpaca hair but we felt heavy pressure to buy their goods. Their Alpaca wasn’t nice.

Hi Sheri,
Thank you so much for your feedback. I’m really glad the transportation worked out well and that both Raul and Elizabeth made such a great impression—I’ll be sure to share your kind words with them. I’m also happy to hear you enjoyed Tierra Viva Cusco. I’m sorry, though, that Conde de Lemos and the time in Arequipa didn’t meet your expectations. Your input is truly helpful, and we’ll keep it in mind when recommending hotels and planning final trip days in the future.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts—it really helps us improve.
Warm regards,
Liz

For the first time, we went through a travel agency for our vacation, and the experience was extremely good. Highly recommended for a trip to Peru for sure. Kimkim and the local agent, Liz, were very good at understanding our style of vacation, and after very few iterations, the agent came up with a plan for 2 weeks that was above and beyond our expectations. We knew we wanted to go to the jungle, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca, but the trip was filled with a lot of little things we would not have thought of if we were organizing it ourselves. For the main sightseeing places, we had either a private guide (Machu Picchu) or we were at most 2-3 families (ATV tour through the Sacred Valley or the Rainbow Mountain). Having the guide was really good since there is no signage explaining the various sites. The guides also took the time to take a picture of the whole family, and it is nearly the first time in our lives that we have beautiful photos with the four of us.
Aside from the must-see places like Machu Picchu, the travel agency proposed a few things we did not know. First was the excursion to the Rainbow Mountain. They booked for the new excursion (less touristy) where three mountains can be spotted, and it was fantastic. The walk to the "top" was wonderful, surrounded by alpacas and beautiful views. The second big surprise was the train from Cusco to Puno. A 10-hour ride through the Andes on a beautiful old-fashioned train, with an amazing 3-course meal, live music, and panoramic car. Last but not least, they booked us a meal at a farm in Ollantaytambo, and it was such an authentic experience with some of the best food I had ever had.
The agent organized a private pickup to the minute for every transportation and helped with the logistics for some excursions (such as a van brought our luggage while we were riding the ATV). Of the whole trip, the only thing we did not like was the visit to the Taquila island, since we were on a boat with 35 people and we were rushed on numerous occasions.
The hotels they chose for us were extremely good, always very central. Particularly good was the one in Cusco, in the middle of the historic center.
Throughout the trip, we had a contact person in Peru (Thank you, Lisbeth!), always ready to help us and answer questions.
The trip was unforgettable and organized nearly to perfection, I truly don't think I could do the same on my own. My only reservation about Kimkim is a bit about the price transparency. The money we paid seems a little high given the local prices, but in fairness, we got quotes from other travel agencies, and it was in the right ballpark.

The kayaking was good, but it was attached to the group (a very large group) to go to the Taquila island. We were rushed to he island with the Uros, and also, all the time, on the Taquila island, we were rushed. I strongly advise getting a private tour on the lake instead; this excursion did not work for us. A real pity since the kayak part was nice. Also we were expecting 1.5 hours of kayaking but we did only 1 h.
