Best of Córdoba

Top itineraries and travel advice in and around Córdoba
Córdoba has a long history that dates as far back as Roman times. However, Córdoba’s hour of greatest glory was between the 8th and 11th centuries when it served as the capital of the Moorish kingdom. This was when work began on the Great Mosque, or Mezquita, which - after several centuries of additions and enlargements - became one of the largest in all of Islam. When the city was reconquered by the Christians in 1236, the new rulers of the city were so awed by its beauty that they left it standing, choosing to build their cathedral in the midst of its rows of arches, creating the extraordinary church-mosque we see today. This building alone is reason enough to add Córdoba to your itinerary.

Today’s Córdoba is much more than just the Mezquita. The historic old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, full of small, winding cobblestone streets to be explored. Wander between wrought-iron balconies and courtyards overflowing with flowers, stop by lively taverns to enjoy a flamenco performance, and try the local cuisine.
