Playa Montezuma and Samara are two beach towns located on the Nicoya Peninsula. To travel from the southern tip of the Puntarenas Province up the coast to the Guanacaste Province will take approximately three hours by car. Route 160 appears to be the most direct way, however, it can be slow-going and difficult to traverse. For a smoother ride, you're better off taking Routes 21 and 150 which total 102 miles (164 km).

Having your own car on a trip to the Peninsula is the way to go. This part of Costa Rica is best explored with plenty of time and flexibility. Read up on these useful travel insights before you go and you'll maximize your trip.

Taxis and buses are used frequently by locals and tourists and considered reliable transportation. Either option is affordable and can also be used in tandem if you plan to stop along the way. When it comes to public transit, no direct bus is available from Montezuma to Samara. Opt for a shuttle or tourist bus for a quicker, more comfortable ride.

By Private Transfer

Duration: 2-4 hours

There are several options when it comes to driving but plan for at least a couple of hours. Route 160 hugs the coast and offers views of the Pacific. It's only 55 miles (89 km) but much of that is unpaved and two-lane. Delays can be expected if there's been recent bad weather. Routes 21 and 150 are major roads but you'll tack on an extra hour or so of travel time. All of these options have plenty of places to stop for photo ops or food breaks.

By Taxi

Duration: 2-4 hours

Taxi rides are fairly cheap and you'll still have freedom over your itinerary. It's a common way to get between towns and avoid the hassles of bus travel. Have your accommodations book one in advance or find one in the town center of Montezuma. Many taxi drivers use 4x4 vehicles so you shouldn't have a problem if you take back roads.

By Bus

Duration: 2-4 hours

While you could travel the entire way by local bus, the journey would take most of a day. Instead, book a ticket with an operator that provides door-to-door service. These shuttles and tourist buses usually come with comfortable amenities and plenty of room for baggage. A non-stop trip should take about the same amount of time as a taxi or private transfer. Always check the company website beforehand for information on timetables and routes.
