Venturing the 285 miles (458km) from Reykjavik to the fishing village of Höfn is best done by self-driving to take advantage of the bountiful exploration opportunities. The harborside town serves as a great base and a hub for all things Southeast Iceland. It is possible to travel via bus, however, it's not recommended due to the length and inflexibility to stop at points of interest along the route. There is a domestic airport in the nearby town of Hornafjordur, making a short flight (under one hour) a possibility as well.

For travelers looking to spend more time exploring the southern coast along the way to Höfn, check out this 8-day itinerary. It will have you hiking in the highlands, getting sprayed by waterfalls like Selfoss and Seljalandsfoss, and viewing the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.

The gorgeous trek to Höfn can also be done via private transfer or group tour, however, it is a more expensive and offers less freedom than driving on your own.

By Car

Duration: 10-12 hours

It's a straightforward drive on the Ring Road (Route 1) along the Southern coast, with a short detour on Route 99 to reach the edge of the peninsula where Höfn resides.

Although the journey can be done in just under six hours, it's wise to allow for plenty of extra time to adventure along the way. The opportunities are seemingly endless; marvel at waterfall giants, hop on a jeep tour into the Laki Craters, feel small at the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, hike in Skaftafell, and go ice-caving in Vatnajökull National Park. Once you reach the village of Höfn, you'll be in close proximity to view the impressive Vestrahorn mountain range. Visit Stokksnes for an iconic vantage point of this mountain range next to the sea.

By Plane

Duration: 1-2 hours

Travelers wishing to use Höfn as a base for exploring the area without spending time on a longer drive can choose to take a short flight from Reykjavik's domestic airport just outside of the city center direct to Hornafjordur. After landing, a ten-minute taxi ride or self-drive in a car rental is required to reach the village. Flights are sometimes dependent on the moody weather.

By Private or Group Transfer

Duration: 10-12 hours

Hiring a private driver or joining a group tour to reach Höfn is possible as well, however, it may be the more expensive option and offers less flexibility. It's recommended to do this as a multi-day venture for optimal exploring.
