Beach Day in Maremma & Southern Tuscany, Monte Argentario

Today is all about relaxing in Maremma and visiting some of the picturesque beaches around Southern Tuscany. That's right—Tuscany is even more than gorgeous hilltop villages and wineries! Unlike in flashy Forte dei Marmi further north, Maremma is where you disappear into the dunes, the parasol pines, the whale-back islands, and the timeless countryside. This region hosts some of the best beaches in Tuscany and Italy. After Liguria, it has more Blue Flag beaches than anywhere else in Italy, with beguiling coves clustered along the coast or carved into the Monte Argentario peninsula. Follonica, Castiglione della Pescaia, and Alberese are amongst the most popular ones. Top beaches include those in the Nature Reserve of the Uccellina Park and the lovely Feniglia Beach that connects Mount Argentario to the mainland, where people build interesting mini sun shelters from driftwood.

Some Recommendations for Beaches:

• Punta Ala Beach gives you the best of both worlds: one white-pebbled beach directly at the end of the tourist port and a sandy beach between Punta Hidalgo and Cala del Barbiere.
• Le Rocchette Beach is the most popular and famous in Tuscany, so be prepared for crowds, but it might be worth it for the graveled coves and crystalline waters.
• The Dune Beach is big, sandy, and has shallow water, so it's a great option for kids and families.
• Marina Di Grosseto is very wide, long, and sandy with a gradual seabed, plus it offers a lot of fun water sports!
• Within the Parco Regionale Della Maremma, there are two good options, Marina Di Alberese and Cala Di Forno. Both are great for remote excursions (and the former is popular with nudists).
