Carrara Sculpting Class in Cinque Terre

Baptistery of Saint John, one of the oldest buildings in Florence
Channel your inner artist and the great Michelangelo during a marble sculpting workshop. This family-friendly activity explores the creative and skillful world of sculpting marble with a professional artisan. At the end of the class, you’ll take home your own handmade souvenir.

To start, your host will give you a tour of the studio and explain the techniques used to sculpt the stone. Next, learn about the history of the craft and its importance throughout Italy. Once you understand the background, you’ll appreciate all the marble creations you’ll see during the rest of your trip! While you listen and observe, enjoy snacking on traditional local focaccia bread, pesto, and drinks.

With a marble tile, protective glasses, gloves, hammer, and chisel in hand, you’re ready to complete your own creation. Taking inspiration from your history lesson, draw anything you’d like on your tile. It could be an animal, flower, fantasy figure, building, or design. Then, your host will show you how to use the hammer and chisel to remove the stone around the drawing. Next, smooth your marble work with emery and sandpaper, and watch how compressed air tools remove any remaining traces.

Sign your masterpiece and take it home with you as the perfect souvenir! This activity allows you to dive deeper into Italian history and culture, all while having fun with your family and friends.
