Cultural Walk with a Local, Bergen

4.0 (10 reviews)
Visit famous landmarks like Rosenkrantz Tower as well as lesser-visited gems as you explore Bergen with a local.

Overview

Cradled between majestic mountain peaks and sheltered from the North Sea by a necklace of islands, Bergen is Norway’s second-largest city and an unrivalled blend of cultural richness and natural grandeur. Known as the Gateway to the Fjords for its proximity to the world-famous Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord, Bergen offers an atmosphere found nowhere else — vibrant, historic, and spectacularly scenic.

Few cities are so elegantly set into a rugged mountainside. The city reveals two faces: the historic Hanseatic harbor and the modern, lively center. Its narrow cobblestone lanes, colorful wooden façades, and UNESCO-listed Bryggen speak of a maritime heritage stretching back to the 12th century.

Bergen’s magic lies in contrasts — a hub of art and music, yet steeped in folklore; a thriving modern city, yet as intimate as a village. Two scenic ascents — by funicular or cable car — carry you to mountaintops where fjords, islands, and the glistening coastline stretch to the horizon. Once you’ve experienced Bergen’s geography and spirit, you’ll understand why it is the very heart of Norway’s fjords.

Physical limitations made it impossible to do a walking tour. Instead, your local expert agreed to provide us with an in-depth overview as well as a detailed description of what we would experience at each of the stops of the hop-on-hop-off bus route. We were thus equipped with a far richer and more detailed description of the features and characteristics of these sites than the tour operators were capable of producing. Read more

Tips for future travelers

Be prepared for any kind of weather. Bring layers, hiking shoes, umbrellas. It rained almost every day but it would also clear at different times so we were able to time activities by checking the radar.

Guides English was poor and he was relatively new to Bergen. I would not recommend using the same guide.
